Message app no pics or gifs on a new phone

brand new Nokia 7.1, its a beast but so far one big problem..can't send or receive pics or gifs of any type. it says message app (google message I guess?) anyway need to find out secret button to make it work cause I have two buddies where we speak thru gifs and pics (yes I'm a nerd). Please help tell me what magic button I didn't push. If its because I force stopped gmail (the worst) I will not be happy...thanks in advance. Glad to join the droid club (previous windows phone nerd user)...

well it is not because you force stop gmail. why can't you send pictures? an error? or does it not get received?

are you searching the online for gifs? on my message app in the conversation i'm in, i can select the smiley face icon near the spacebar on the screen and then select gif and browse from there for a gif.

and just curious are the conversations between android devices? or from ios and android?
 
Yes in app I can actually get recommended gifts in the app and they don't send. Also I looked and yes I am sending and receiving with people with iPhones
