Is there a way to change the color of the message bubbles..not just the background?

I use Verizon's message app "message +" and you can change colors, shapes and font types.

I don't know about other stock messaging apps, but the stock Android/Google "messages" app has this feature. It's available on the play store (click link).

Simply tap the 3 dot menu in a conversation and set a color for the contact. I don't think you can change your own bubble color, but you can set whatever color you want for each contact.
