Help message notification alert sounds

[soulstar]

Hi all. Sorry if this has been asked before but I tried searching.
This is my first android phone coming from years of blackberries. I've noticed that when messages arrive and I don't clear/check them on my phone, all subsequent messages that come after are not alerting using notification sounds.

Is there a way for notification sounds to play regardless?

good question. I am curious about this as well.

I also notice that i do not always get pushed emails, and every once in a while I need to poll for them. (exchange)

I can't say for certain with 2.1 as I'm still stuck on 1.5 however on 1.5 it's somewhat hidden away, it's not with the notification settings it's in the messaging settings, includes an override for it to vibrate on message and designates whether it alerts you for all new messages or just the first one
