How strange. The simple fix is downloading an SMS app like Contacts+ or iPhone Messages. Turn off the default messaging app's notification and keep the app's notifications on.

If the problem continues or you don't want to try the first method and want to fix the default SMS apps, I'd say to re-flash the original Lucid firmware. This doesn't require root, it's based on my Unbrick video for the Lucid. You use only LG official tools. Reflashing your phone will make it like brand new and you will loose everything in it, so backup things if you need to.

The reason I say to reflash is because the SMS app is default and can't be fixed without being reflashed I think. In the video I mention unbrick, just follow the steps and everything.
In short:
1: Download LG drivers.
2: Install LG Mobile Support Tool
3: Put phone into download mode. (Turn it off, connect to PC and boot while holding volume up + down)
4: While in LG Support Tool, Click "Customer Support" and then "Recovery Phone". It will do an operation, downloading the stock firmware then reinstalling basically.

I had the same problem. After trying many other things, I tried turning on pop-up notification for SMS. The next time I got a new message the 'ghost text' popped up as well. I was then able to delete the message that was causing the headache.
