Message notification

I am using Samsung Galaxy S III. My message folder always shows '13' un-read messages. I tried with restarting the phone etc. But no hope ? Is there any way to fix the issue without deleting the messages or resetting the phone ?

Try going into "settings", then "Application manager", then "all" at the top, and scroll down to the messaging app and tap on it, then in the next screen tap on "clear data"
