Message Notifications

I am coming to my DROID RAZR Max from an iPhone 4s. So far I really like the phone. My one issue is with messaging. Is there anyway to turn off the green notification light every time I get a message? I also have the texting shortcut as one of the 4 main buttons on my phone. I clicked on the actual messaging app and noticed that the texting one from in there had a 1 in the corner just like my iPhone used to. Is there anyway to get it so that a number will be in the corner on the home screen?

As far as I can tell, I haven't been able to find a "master" notification setting. You may need to go into the individual apps' settings that would give any kind of notification and turn off LED alerts. Some offer that option, some don't.
