Help Messaging doesn't seem to work properly?

I have two Orange San Francisco's next to my laptop. One is my own, unrooted one bought from Orange; the second, bought for my wife, was purchased over Ebay pre-rooted with Android 2.2 installed.

When I text on my un-rooted phone, which runs 2.1, I have a choice of two messaging icons. One is a bright green speech bubble I don't use because it doesn't seem to work. Instead I use an alternative messaging system which is one of the fixed icons at the bottom of the screen. When I click on it and select the person I want to send it to, I get a grey silhouette of a head. Clicking on that takes me to a scrollable list of contacts.

But on the rooted, 2.2 phone for my wife, I have only the green speech bubble app, which offers no means whatsoever by which contacts can be selected. You apparently have to type in the number by memory, which is no use.

Does anyone have any ideas? Are there any ways to access the same messaging app as on my unrooted phone?

It's possible I might need recommendations for 2nd-party messaging apps, if anyone has any? I need to find one that functions the same way as the messaging or contact selection on my wife's old, non-smart phone: all you needed to do was click the text button, then type a single letter (say, 'g'), and you would then be presented with a list of every one whose name begins with G. I'm less than impressed at finding myself confronted with a scrollable list of hundreds of contacts and having to search through them for just the right one.

I'm concerned because so far, the rooted, 2.2 phone appears to have less functionality than my unrooted and locked OSF. If anyone can help with any of this, it'd surely be appreciated.

Ok, I've been maybe slightly dense. Forgot wife had taken Sim card out of new phone and put it into old one, before going to work. Anyhoo: put my own sim card into her phone and realised it was an issue with copying all the contacts over from her sim card and into her new OSF. What I also didn't realise was that all the 'numbers' displaying in the contacts list were, in fact, email addresses. Somehow, when I copied everything onto her sim card on her old phone, the phone numbers didn't come across. Just a bunch of other email-related dreck associated with her rarely-used google account (which of course is required before you can even get the damn phone to work).

I did manage to import some phone contacts from my own sim card, and get the messaging to start working, at last. Not sure I've got it all quite right, but I'm a bit further than I was.
