messenger apps - any suggestions

I am looking into downloading a messenger, started out with bingo!im MSN but some of my friends use yahoo and so they didn't show up on the apparently friends list. So I have been looking at others. Was curious if anyone has had good luck with any messengers that are reliable?

I found ebuddy linked all my accounts easily and has a nice simple interface
