Where do I edit these settings ?
on phone : from "main screen" (after boot) you hit the menu button on the phone
to bringup wireless settings, there you can adjust the DNS provider. it should probably say something like 192.xx.xx.xx... which is on the phone's internal IP table which gets rerouted to some metro pcs dns service. just change it to one of the above ip's.

on tether

linux/unix: /etc/resolv.conf add "nameserver <ip>"
win machine: edit network connection, change DNS 1 and DNS2

Care to provide a step by step path. I'm going into system settings, Wireless & Networks and I am not seeing anything to allow you to change DNS (nor do I see it under other setting options).

Changed with QPST.
Have u changed these settings, if so, screen shots would help understanding.

DNS is the service that translates www.android.com to the IP address (72.14.204.101 in this case) that allows computers to find each other (think of DNS like a phone book).

So, yes changing to a faster DNS can speed up your surfing speed. How noticeable is this change is debatable (I mean do you really think you could tell the difference between a DNS server that returns an IP address in .05ms vs one that does it in .5ms particularly when your not comparing them together). If MetroPCS DNS is unreliable (ie the phone has to request several times before getting an IP, I don't know that it actually is) or particularly slow then it might make a difference.

Some DNS services also have other benefits. For instance OpenDNS filters out known malware and phishing sites so you can't reach them.

Anyway if you want to switch you DNS for your home computers you might want to check out DNS Benchmark (no Android version though) which can help you identify the fastest server to you (since a number of factors can affect a servers performance and make Server A better for you and Server B better for your friend).

Thank you. I don't see any settings to change it btw so, does the phone need to be rooted?

I am a lifetime member of Sirius Sat. radio. I get free streaming for my PC. When I use the tethering on my phone to computer. I get kick off from streaming music on my pc. It is because I am not paying for the $3.00 per month for the android app. I changed the DNS and now I can listen to Howard Stern on my pc through Metro pcs streem.
