Well, if it works from 1 ft away then the app is working fine. Either something is in the way when you use it from a distance or your unit is defective --likely to be the former.
It's the phone or the IR but I just brought the phone. I know because I tried it from the same place with my tab 3 and it works perfect, I don't know if it might be the xperion rom I flashed though.
