Help (MetroPCS) Jellybean OTA Not Downloading...?

etrak

Lurker
Hello all. Sorry if my questions here have been covered in another thread. I'm new here and looked and didn't find anything...

Anyway I have a S3 from MetroPCS. Being the inquisitive sort I am, one of the very first things I did to my phone was flash Clockwork mod to it, and make a backup image of the stock phone.

After that I messed around a bit, tried Cyanogenmod, wasn't impressed, so I went back to stock. Not long after, the phone took an OTA update from Metro (from 4.0.4 -> 4.1.2). Everything seemed great except the phone told me it wouldn't update anymore because it had been "modified". I wasn't happy with that, so I flashed the old 4.0.4 image on there, rooted it, used Triangle Away to reset the download counter to 0, then did a factory reset. Now, as far as anything on the phone can tell, it is completely stock and unmodified. However, it doesn't seem to want to do an OTA update to 4.1.2 anymore. I've been manually trying, on wifi and on 4g, changing different settings, for about 2 weeks now... but it always says "No update available".

Am I screwed? Did some flag get set at Metro saying my phone couldn't do OTA updates anymore, or...? I've called support and they are less than helpful ("try again later!"). I want to take their Jellybean update... :(

Thanks for any tips guys! Love the forum.

Also when you went back to Stock Run did you go back to Stock Recovery replacing CWM?

Yes sir. When exiting CWM it warned the recovery may be overwritten, and asked if I wanted to prevent that. I declined and allowed the recovery to be overwritten by the stock image [which trips the download counter, apparently].

Which is why I rooted and used Triangle Away. So now the download counter is 0, image/recover is completely stock 4.0.4.

+1 to what GTwalling said but are you sure the stock recovery is installed? Boot into it to be sure?

I appreciate you guys trying to help me out!

Just to be doubly sure, I booted into download mode, and the text says:

ODIN MODE
Product Name: SCH-R530M
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
Qualcomm Secureboot: Enable

And when I boot into recovery, I see what I assume is the standard Samsung recover. Lots of text that starts with:

Android system recovery <3e>

At the bottom of the recovery it says:

# MANUAL MODE #
-- Applying Multi-CSC --
Applied the CSC-code : MTR
Successfully applied mutli-CSC

Not sure what all that means but there it is.

Again thanks for the help guys :)

simple solution but its going to require you using odin

here is the actual update in a zip file and you can only install this update with odin

http://www.shabbypenguin.com/OUDstuff/Samsung/Metro/R530M/Stock/MB2/update.zip

follow shabby's guide to using odin to flash this firmware and yes you will be flashing a zip than rather a tar file.

http://androidforums.com/official-u...0m-return-stock-reset-your-flash-counter.html

last case scenario if for any reason it dosn't work, flash the MB2 (Official 4.1.2 Release) that we leaked out. its the official untouched metro pcs 4.1.2 jellybean firmware that comes with all the metro bloatware. hopefully these links helps you. if any question at all dont hesitate to ask :)

Thank you for the help! I'd like to do the MB2 release [keep everything strictly Metro-copacetic for now]. Where can I download it? Do I flash the MB2 firmware the same way as the instructions on the other thread you linked?

EDIT: Just read through the other thread, I understand now. But Shabby Penguin's website seems to be down :(

EDIT again: After Shabby's website came back up I downloaded the appropriate TAR and did the ODIN instructions. My phone is now at 4.1.2, download counter is 0, everything appears to be working perfectly. Thank you guys so much for the help!

Your very much welcome. I remember first time I tried Odin I was like oh boy I better not mess up my Samsung indulge lol but after following steps I was like man that was easy.
