So when the merge is complete and the cdma gets shut down does that mean I can't switch the Galaxy s3 to cdma(3g) when I want to save battery and the signal would be stuck on LTE??

By the time the merger is complete it would be time for a upgrade. They will be running as they normally do for a year or 2.

And the phone will receive an ota firmware update that will make it work on T-Mobile flawlessly after that..
Or we'll figure it out together!
The device has more radios and modes then any of the carriers want you to think.
