Micro SD Card & Music

Howdy. I have a question about music storage and Micro SD card. Right now I have a Galaxy Nexus (the original one) which does not have a micro SD card. I keep a lot of music on my phone via Play Music. I noticed I was using a lot of data until I moved the music "to device." When I look at STORAGE though I am pretty sure this isn't coming up as AUDIO storage but as APP storage. It shows the following:

Total Space: 28.13GB
Available: 15.93GB
Apps: 9.93GB
Pics, Videos: 1.96GB
Audio: 11.38MB
Downloads: .95MB
Cached Data: 17.02MB
Misc: 141MB

It IS coming up that Google Play Music has 8.49GB of storage/data. The rest are in MB.

My question is - I want to upgrade to a Samsung Galaxy S5 since my phone is pretty old. Only the 16GB is available right now with the micro SD card slot. Is there any way I will be able to store the music on the micro SD card to save on space on the phone? Or should I hold out for the 32GB version?

Putting music on an SD card is simple. I have a Xperia Z and have over 20GB on a 32GB SD card in the phone. Just hook the phone up to a computer and transfer the music files into a folder and then the folder to the phones SD card.

Connect your phone to the PC, go to the start icon in the lower right corner of the screen and then open 'computer'...You will get a screen that shows hard discs, removable storage and your phone. Open the phone and you will see two places to store data, the phone and the SD card. Open the SD card. Now open your Music files on your PC and transfer desired files from the PC to the SD card.

In the Settings for Play Music there's now an option to choose external storage as the default location. That will allow an external card to be used for caching streamed media as well as anything downloaded.

As JIMV states, you've always been able to copy music locally to sdcard and have Play Music use it.

I have the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition. Think of it as a Nexus with MicroSD support.

In the Google Music app, there's two things that you need to do in order to get your current library onto your SD card, assuming you've already synchronized your music library with Google Play Music on the desktop/web;

  1. Go into settings and change the default storage to MicroSD
  2. "Pin" each playlist/album/song you want on your MicroSD.

Doing the above will cause your phone to automatically remain in sync with any changes that you make to your music library via desktop (though you may need to pin new additions to prevent it from streaming).

Yes, you can still do it the old fashioned way by plugging your phone in via USB and drag/drop, or even syncing with a music manager (MusicBee, Music Monkey, etc.). But if you're already using the Google Music app, why not go the distance?

Also, I'd hold off on your Galaxy S5 purchase just a little bit longer. There "may" be a Google Play Edition on the short horizon, and if I were in the market for a new phone, that's the one I'd go for. If you want the Touchwiz model as opposed to the Google model, however, no need to wait.

But it is definitely relieving to know that if I get the 16GB Samsung Galaxy S5 that I will have the option of storing the music onto external storage on the SD card. I don't know when the 32GB of the phone will be released and I am very ready for a new phone.

I do have my music synced onto Google Play Music - I have it uploaded to there from my computer to the Google Play Music. I have access to it on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus and on my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Tablet (which I never use for music, but I can get it on there, which is good to know.)

My main worry was being ABLE to put it onto an SD card...which it looks like I will be able to do - thank you very much for answering my questions and quelling my fears!

Before you make your purchase, check how much user memory is available. My 32GB S4 only had around 25 GB of user memory available after all of Samsungs stuff was put on it. (The 16 GB version only had 8 GB of user memory.)

To expand on your valid point:

The Galaxy S4 TW model had roughly 9GB (of the advertised 16GB) available at launch on most carriers, and has had this number slightly increased after some updates. The GPe model had just over 11GB available.

But the S5 16GB model has LESS THAN 8GB available to the user. I believe the number on an unlocked model was 7.78GB, and this will be further reduced by carrier "customization."

Given Google's changes to MicroSD support, I cannot advocate buying a phone with less than 32GB of advertised storage these days. So, it may be worth the wait.
 
just wondering, anyone else notice that for the S5, with google play music the storage location option is "greyed out"? I want to save to SD card but it will only allow me to do internal storage. So frustrating!!!
 
I know this question is a bit old, but... Yes. I have a Galaxy S4 with about 50GB of music on a 64GB SD card. I use the Poweramp player and it works fine that way.
