Microsoft Surface Laptop Go

so i just bought this computer as both of my chromebooks (Asus chromebook and the Pixelbook) just decided to crap out on me.....and yes i have done all of the troubleshooting to no avail.....i will be contacting both Asus and Google for any warranty replacements.

in the mean time i decided to get the new laptop that will be released Oct 13th. so in a few weeks i will have a pretty legit laptop. it comes with 4gig of ram 64 gigs of ssd and an I5 processor. for $549 that is not bad.

so until then it might be harder for me to reply here as i will be using a Samsung Tab A and my note 10+ to hang out here.

i will post a review when i get the laptop. i did forget to ask when i will be getting the device. it is supposed to be mailed to my house. do i get it on release day? or do i have to wait extra for it to arrive to my house?

I think you’re going to be very pleased. We have a bunch of those at work and the folks with them love them.
Who did you order it from? If it’s being delivered by a courier-type service, my guess is you’ll get it on the release date.

i went in to Best Buy to buy a laptop right then and there, but the sale associate persuaded me to wait for the surface laptop go to come out in a few weeks. so i pre-ordered it thru him. i hope to get on release day.

right now i'm attempting to revive an old laptop Toshiba Satellite A665-S6100X. i forgot the password though and i'm trying to see if i can crack it without having to re-install windows on it again.
 
I woildnt't bother reinstalling Windows, Just use Linux. Mint is a great distro and will make the laptop seem more responsive. Also, don't forget that Viruses are non-existant on Linux. Fir Office, Libre Office is to all intents and putposes completely compatible with MS Office (Macros/Scripts are the exception).

if there is data on it that you want, pull the drive and “slave” it as an additional drive in another Windows PC. You’ll be prompted to take admin control over the drive, but then you’ll be able to access and copy off all the data.

When you put it back in the Toshiba, run the restore feature (not sure how that’s done with that brand, google will tell you) and it will reset to day one. Easier than a windows reinstall.

Or at that point you could take Davdi’s suggestion and go to Linux Mint since you’ll have recovered the data. ;)

Those are great ideas!!!!!

Never thought about linux. I bought the laptop when it came out in 2011. No idea what data is on it and don't really care. I'll look into mint.....thanx guys.
 
guess what i'm typing this post on?

yep you guessed it......its my new surface laptop.

so far i'm pretty pleased with it. i have to get used to windows again as i have been mostly on my chromebooks for the past 3 years or so. at first the laptop was pretty slow especially on web pages. but now it is super zippy. plus i use chrome and the laptop really wanted me to use microsoft edge which is their new browser. i might try that later.

the screen is pretty amazing. granted it is only a 12.45" screen.

will see how the battery tests after a few weeks.

For any browser you can export your current bookmarks and them import them to another. (Note that MS browsers call them favorites, not bookmarks.)

To export your Chrome bookmarks, go to: chrome://bookmarks/ and then click the three vertical dots on the top right of the page, then choose export bookmarks. Save the file in a place that makes sense to you, then start the import from the other browser. Copy that exported file to a thumb drive or someplace you can get to it if your computer dies because that's a great backup.

In Edge (Chrome), navigate to edge://favorites/ and then click the three horizontal buttons that are to the right of the Add Folder link (not the three at the very top right of the browser). Then click Import Favorites and a GUI will appear that will allow you to pick source browser, profile, etc. It's a nice little tool. If the browser you want to import from is not on the same device, then copy that exported file to the target, and then in the GUI menu for "Import from" click the drop-down and select 'favorites or bookmarks html file' then point it to the file you copied over.

It's easier than that sounds. ;)

actually it was much easier then what you proposed. i just launched edge, went into it's settings, selected "import browser data", and select chrome and selected what data i wanted to import......and bam!!!!!! everything is now moved over to edge!!!!!

I'd still do an export to keep a backup of the "favorites." :D
 
ok so i'm switching back to chrome. edge was great until it started doing this popup tab thing for random websites. i have the Adblock extension turned on and i check edges popup tab settings that it is supposed to stop it from happening, but it still does. so unless someone knows of a way to stop from another tab opening up, i am back to using chrome. edge was great up until it started happening a few days ago.
 
@ocnbrze You started this thread three years ago, when you bought this computer. Now that it's been a few years: Can you give us an update, and tell us what you think of your Surface Laptop Go now?

well it came and went. my dog did not see it lying on top of my bed. he ended up jumping on my bed knocking my computer to the floor. things attached to the motherboard came off and i did not get Geek Squad protection. so after that pc, i went to google's pixelbook which i still have. but i wanted a more robust computer and i am now rocking the Asus zenbook pro which i absolutely love.

why did i not get another surface go? i do not know. it felt more like a netbook than a computer to me. i really missed having number pad. the keyboard felt cramped over time to me. i already had the pixelbook and was using that more often. i loved the screen and compared to the surface, pixelbook just looked better.......so i just continued using the pixelbook.
 
I'm sad to hear your computer broke. I have a Surface Go, which is much like the Surface Laptop Go, and I love it! It's both a laptop (with the keyboard attachment) and a tablet, and I run both Android and Windows on it.

But then, I like my Surface because it is a tablet, I can hold it in my hand and all. You said your Surface felt like a netbook, does that mean it's smaller than you'd like? Maybe you didn't like your Surface for the same reason I like my Surface.

yeah i should have bought the surface laptop vs the surface go. i probably will not get a surface computer any more. i really love my zenbook right now. and i am glad that i have my pixelbook as a backup. if am traveling, i'll probably bring my pixelbook as it is very thin and lightweight.
