Root Mid-root RUU download issue...

HoboHorse

Newbie
Hi all. Long time reader, first time poster. I was trying to avoid having to post any questions by reading all the excellent info available, but it appears i've cocked up quite early on...

I read the effen manual as suggested, created a ubuntu liveCD and booted that. Ran the AAHK, got the pass code, started the program and selected yes to downgrade. Selected yes to download the RUU but forgot i hadn't re-connected the wifi. threw up a failed message and asked if i wanted to flash this ROM, to which i said No - trying to get out and start again. This then went and rebooted my phone a couple of times with the volume up and power at the red triangle. Now i'm in the HBOOT menu i think with my options - Fastboot, Recovery, Factory Reset, Simlock and Image CRC. I also managed to close the AAHK by accident in my ubuntu n00bness.

Does anyone know where to go from here? Any answers massively appreciated, don't want to turn my phone into a paperweight... If anyone wants any more info, I'll be happy to provide. Thanks.

Phew, gambled on recovery and it booted back into the old stock ROM. Phone is detected by AAHK and i'll try not to make any stupid mistakes this time. I'll update this thread with a happy story in a short while hopefully... Then i just need to decide on a ROM...

Got this message, think it will be to do with the failed download?

Would you like to DOWNGRADE? y/n y
Woah dude[tte] - bogus md5sum! Bad mojo.... skipping flash.
Check it out - renamed the file to PD98IMG/PD98IMG-GB2.zip-20121103:142114
You can re-download the file and keep going...
Download this RUU? (y/n) y

Downloading now so all seems ok <crosses fingers>

I'm sure i will post more once i get into flashing ROMs, seems like a really tight little community going on here. I'm thinking of trying Jellytime R25 first, but will try something with Sense too, i like my clock / weather widget and lock screen icons / music player...

Just a quick update, after a few failed attempts at rooting I re-formatted the sd card to FAT32, downgrade sorted and rooted. Seems odd to have an old, fresh out of the box ROM again... Cheers for the assistance, I'm off to read up about Flashing ROMs now. :D

Cheers Ewoedo, i've been following that thread post for post pretty much. Got my backup done now with 4ext and ready to go ROM hunting...

So what flavor strikes your fancy? Something familiar, Stone Cold Ice Cream, Jelly Bean or something really odd

I went as far into the future as i could with JellyTime R26.2, but the lack of sense scared me and i reverted to the pre root downgrade. Going to go for something ICS with sense i think now, more research...

Cheers for the pointer, I've just finished downloading Blackout ICS and Trickdroid V4 - Think i'm going with Trickdroid as Blackout ICS wifi hotspot isn't working, although I could easily be persuaded otherwise... Has anyone tried both? Think i'll flash them both and compare over the next week or so, getting the hang of it now (i think)...

Blackout is a good choice if you don't need the WiFi hotspot. It is based on an Incredible S ROM so you wont get odd scaling issues. Voice call sound quality is a hit or miss affair. I think you do need the Hopspot, so lets skip that.

You have TrickDroid v4, but that is discontinued. It was replaced by ViperDHD whose future is uncertain. If you want TrickDroid I would actually recommend Version 3. Version 4 is built on a new base, had a fair number of serious bugs (Google sync not working), which wont be fixed. TrickDroid v3 is not perfect, but it makes for a better daily driver.

Sabsa Prime can be a temperamental ROM. Getting a good install is problematic, but after a lot user trial and error feedback, I think I can navigate you to a good Sabsa install.

Another option might be Virtuous Infinity. I find the ROM a bit slow and power hungry.

I would be inclined to recommend Sabsa Prime at this point in time.

Cheers Ral, appreciate the overview here and in your thread on sense ROMs... After a day on Trickdroid V4 it's a bit of a mixed bag. I like the look and feel of it but there are some bugs that would annoy me in the long run. I'm a bit overcome with all the options as well with using the tweaks file - can you re-run that anytime if you want a change? How did you find Viper? I might be starting to think like you - maybe time to move over to vanilla and get used to it as everyone is saying good things about Aospx...

When i decided to root, i was hoping to improve battery life, improve speed (was thinking of project butter) and get a few of the new features (google now, etc...) without losing what i already had. I think i'm similar to a few others in that my 2yr contract is up soon (next month) but was hoping for money off my contract and to keep the phone a bit longer until i could afford a One X+ or similar...

Anyway, just a couple of other questions for some of the flashaholics out there.

1/ Does a nandroid backup everything (contacts, msgs, apps, etc...)?

2/ How do you re-install all of your apps on a fresh ROM flash? I used ES file explorer to restore my backup of Astro, which i then used to restore all my other Apps but it took ages doing them one at a time. Not sure i'd want to flash too many ROMs if I need to do that each time...

can you re-run that anytime if you want a change?

Generally, yes installing one incompatible tweak rights over the other. But I have not done it myself. My time on TrickDroid was limited to testing and mainly on issue with getting the dialer working.

How did you find Viper?

Did not get to try the ROM. Download link was pulled before I got the chance. I am not to keen on it. Unless the Dev's work some kind of magic, it is HTC One S port, so basically it will be a bit sluggish on a DHD, and battery life will be less than optimal (different chipset).

On the other questions:

1. Yes.

2. Titanium Backup.
