Migrating From iPod: Address Book?

PeteCress

Android Enthusiast
After the umpteenth time being hosed by an Apple "Upgrade", I just pulled the trigger on a Galaxy Note.

  • I currently use AbcContacts, whose killer feature is the ability to assign one contact to multiple categories and to list by category.
    .
  • I've got my address book mirrored in Outlook 2003, but the equivalency of fields seems weak: It just has "Full Name" and "File As". The LastName/FirstName distinction seems tb lost.
    .
  • I make frequent use of Apple's multiple phone numbers and customizable phone types - whereas Outlook only seems to allow for four predefined phone numbers with type selected from a predefined list.

I don't mind paying a few bucks for a good contacts manager, but it needs to integrate with whatever other apps use contacts (like mapping, email, and so-forth)

Can anybody recommend a migration strategy for the address book?

  • Choice of application?
    .
  • Middleman for exporting data from Apple and importing into Android?

Use iTunes to backup your Apple device. Install Samsung Kies (basically Samsung's PC Suite, or its iTunes equivalent), and run it. Connect your device, and then in the restore backup window, select restore from iPhone backup.

... in the restore backup window, select restore from iPhone backup.

I found "Backup/Restore", but when I drill down to "Restore Data", it wants a "data file" to restore from. There are no Notes/Kies backup files bc I have not yet done a backup.

All that's left is a "Find File" button - and Apple seems to have hidden their backup files in charming little directories like "92b2dd3cd0fca40634d0fa7c548453bf31e3a44b-20120923-184749" and "331b1f161efa8a626e285bbf0d3dee39b0b4a5d8" which, of course, contain no .SBU files.

Sounds like somewhere there is an explicit "Restore From iTunes Backup" choice, but I'm missing it.

??

While I'm at it, is there any hope of migrating my "Categories" into Kies' "Groups"? Categories are a big deal with me and losing them/having to reassign them is going to take a lot of man hours... besides which, I still have fantasies of maintaining an address book on each device (Note and iPod) and actually synchronizing them from time-to-time.

As middlemen, I've tried my gMail/Google contacts, Microsoft's Addressbook, and Microsoft's Outlook.

Even layed out the big bucks for something called WonderShare.... but still no Categories==>Groups.

Best iPod-To-Outside so far is to Microsoft Addressbook, which seems to get pretty much everything including categories.

Everybody seems kind of glib about migrating contacts from Apple to Android. But my experience so far is that once one gets down and dirty, nothing really works 100%. I would have imagined that there would be several products dedicated to synchronizing Apple and Android devices by now. Surely the movement is away from Apple and towards Android.... and such a facility would help sell Android devices to those people looking to have both.

The instructions that sites say is:

For peeps wondering how to migrate Contacts/Calendar/SMS/Photos/Videos from iphone to S3 here's the seamless way to do it:

1) Backup your iphone with iTunes
2) With the same computer, install Kies (latest version) - I did mine on a Mac
3) Run Kies
4) Connect your S3 to the computer via USB (wireless also can, but i recommend USB)
5) Kies will detect that your phone is connected
6) Kies will automatically prompt you to ask if you would like to restore data from an iphone using iTunes that reside in your computer
7) click onto Yes and select what you would like to migrate to your S3, from the iphone itunes backup - Contacts/Calendar/SMS/Photos/Videos/Notes

And you're Done!

if Kies didn't automatically detect and prompt you if you would like to restore data from an iphone backup, just scroll down the main page and you will see a section to restore from an iphone backup.

Its that simple.

It should have been automatic. What step are you having issues?

If it's automatic, there are no steps, right?

I'm starting to think that the "Automatic" part was a one-time prompt the first time I opened Kies. I do remember such a prompt, but it was hopelessly generic. Something like "iTunes data found on PC, do you want to import?".

Well, I've got sixty gigs of music there... and there's not way I wanted anybody to try to import that.... so I declined the prompt.

Has anybody accepted the prompt? Does it pop a dialog that lets one choose which stuff to import?

If so, maybe I need to uninstall Kies and re-install to get the prompt again.
