Mini media Droid

Hello everyone! I just wanted to ask for some opinions and see if anyone has done or thought about doing this...

Next month when the Bionic comes out (fingers crossed :D) I plan to upgrade. I would like to take my original Droid and use it as a media streaming device over WIFI. Any ideas on this?

1. Pretty sure that I will need to root.
2. What would be the best rom for this function?
3. What apps would be best for streaming music (WinAMP, Pandora, etc)?
4. Any other good apps I could use solely over WIFI?
5. Would be a nice bonus to be able to use it as a backup phone over WIFI if need be.

Thanks in advance!

What exactly do you want to do, play music from the phone to a stereo? Or just use it to control a stereo?

Good question. I want to use it as a music player. I thought it would be nice to hook up some old PC speakers I have to it in the garage for when I'm out there working or grilling or whatever. Just thought it would be nice to hook it up to my wifi and stream music (preferably with a free service ;)).

I've read about people using their android phones for controlling their HTPC and such but that isn't what I want to really. Would be a nice bonus function but not on the top of my list.

I know that rooting will need to be done. I'm just not sure if I need to root it before it gets taken off of my service plan or if I can do it after.

Thanks for asking!

You dont need to root to do what you want to do. When you upgrade to the new phone, put this phone into airplane mode, and never take it off, that way it wont try to connect to the network. Then you can turn wifi on, and do basically anything you can do with it now, except make calls. You can put music on it, stream Pandora, etc. No need to root at all.

Um if it doesn't have service you can't make calls/text anyway. You don't really need to do anything special, just connect to wifi and carry on as normal.

I'm on sprint, and I have two old smartphones I occasionally use for media players. If I turn those off airplane mode, it connects to the network, and texts/calls go to that phone instead of my current one. Maybe sprint didn't fully disconnect my phones, but its always a good idea to put it in airplane mode, plus it saves battery since it's not connecting to the network.

That is a good suggestion... but knowing me I will turn it off by accident and then I will be screwed. I would prefer an option that is more reliable. Thanks.

It's really not easy to turn airplane mode off. Turn it on by going to menu-settings-wireless and networks-airplane mode. I really dont think you would do that by accident.
