Root MMS not tied to data?

I thought it was but the other day I had data off and MMS messages were floating in. I was under the impression that SMS did not require data but MMS did.

Just mentioning it because of the MMS issues that always seem to appear with new roms. There may be a way to get them working w/o 3g/4g.

MMS is still tied to the data network, but potentially not 3g/4g (think 1x with data). The current issue with data is that the SIM is being read, but the output has no where to go that understands it. Without that info, our phone doesn't know how to log in to VZW data network and on the ICS leak, all data everything goes thru the APN (VZWINTERNET)

I'm not positive on this next point, but it would seem that as long as your phone has at one point been able to read the SIM card, that it stores this info in the NV of the phone for CDMA purposes. Hence why you can make a phone call on CM9.

sounds like it could be right. but i put my dads sim in when i was running aokp and as soon as it booted up got a text and made a call.. before that this phone had never seen his sim card. maybe its reading the info for calling and texting.. just not picking up the data info.. unless maybe it pulls from the sim into nv before booting the os

I keep my data turned off via power option widget. I will still recieve mms but it will not send unless I turn data back on. What I have noticed after watching the device receive a mms that the phone automatically turn data on to receive the mms,i have actually seen the Icon appear while data Is off I have noticed the same when checking for software updates to.
