Mobile Data and WiFi in Notification Bar

I have the H810 (AT&T) version of the G4 now. When mobile data is turned on, it shows "4G LTE" in the notification area next to the battery and time. But when I turn on WiFi while keeping data turned on the 4G indicator goes away, replaced by the WiFi symbol. Is this normal? Is it a bug in the notification or does the mobile data really go off, and can I change that?

I used to have a Verizon (VS986) G4 and it would show both icons if both were on. This now is my 2nd H810 and if I remember correctly the last one had both but this one doesn't.

It's normal unless you want to keep both wifi and data enabled all the time which doesn't make sense and the battery will take a hit.

WiFi is supposed to turn off the Data radio by design. You only want one path to the Internet or things get really confused. It is normal, the other phone you had was not a normal situation. The display was there, but I guarantee you, the Data radio was off.

Maybe it varies from ROM to ROM, but in any case, it's a good practice to turn data off when you have wifi.

more likely just the ROM, doubt it has anything to do with Verizon.
as my signature shows, have several phones, and used to use a Galaxy S Fascinate, and all of them grey out the Data symbol or it just goes away.

on my Note 4, it just goes away.

Mine is the H631, it has received Marshmallow update some weeks earlier. But be it Lollipop or Marshmallow, the LTE icon disappears when I switch the Wi-Fi on and it reappears when I switch the Wi-Fi off.

FWIW, I also have the H810 and the data shows what you describe, Bruce - if you have wifi and data enabled and in a wifi area, only wifi will show in the notification section.
