Mobile data 'H' icon constantly active!

I have recently noticed that while my HTC Desire S phone
is not in a wi fi area, it switches over to the Data Connection
'H' icon in the system tray, and it is constantly lighting up the
up and down arrow which are displayed under the 'H' icon
every second or so for a split second.

I am not sure why this is doing this as I dont have anything
running (that I know of ) which will be accessing the data
connection. As I have turned of "Auto Sync" and do not
have Latitude running. Nor do I have Push email.

After looking at the 3G Watchdog, I can see that it is sending and
receiving very small amounts of data. But am unsure what or why
this is.

When I got back home from an evening down the pub, I noticed
that my battery was almost drained, and it was pretty much fully charged
before I left the house. So am wondering if it being on and constantly
active is draining the battery.

Does anyone know if this is normal for the up and down arrows
to be going on and off every second? (my only thought is that it
could be just checking that the connection is still live rather than it
down/up loading stuf).

Any help would be appriciated.

I don't have any help to offer myself but I've wondered about the auto-sync toggle and how it works. Are all background apps supposed to / have to obey this setting? Or is it just up to the dev?
