Mobile network question

Hey guys i just have a question regarding Mobile Network.
Well apparently Mobile Network charges your account money due to applications like Google Talk. So i've disabled it and now i can't seem to be receiving texts. I can send texts but not receive them. And then when i enabled Mobile Network again, all the texts came through.
I don't want to keep Mobile Network on because of the charge of money but i do need to receive these texts. . .
Could someone please help me?

My Mobile network settings are
"Data roaming is UNticked"
"Network mode: GSM only"
"Use 2G networks"

Thanks

You can leave Mobile Networks on and go into google talk, have it not auto-login and then logout and exit that app.

I'm confused because SMS is 2G, so it shouldn't care about 3G (MMS and other instant messaging apps will, tho).

Maybe best to let us know your carrier and phone model so others more knowledgeable can help.

So your saying that turning off the Mobile Network shouldn't affect the receiving of texts?
And my model is a LG GT540.

Is it better to have Network Mode GSM/WCDMA auto or GMS only?

And thanks for the Google Talk advice.
Is there anything else that could possibly be charging the money?
Facebook for LG? Email? Google Mail? Maps? Latitude? NDrive? Navigation? etc etc

All of those things in your list are 3G, and therefore would have mobile data charges.

I don't want to over-state the text situation, because it's been a few years since I've been on AT&T, the only GSM carrier I've used.

Just saying - SMS text is 2G tech, and SMS messages are usually their own deal on your billing plan.
