Not knowing your phone or carrier I would have to say your going to have to ask this question in your phones specific forum here at Android Forums. Phones and Carrier methods for establishing or re-establishing your network connection can vary greatly.
They will know pretty much everything about your phone and then some.

I have the same problem. My carrier is MetroPCS and I have the LG Esteem. My software version is ZVE and once I installed a ZVD kernel, it stopped working. Not really sure what to do now for fear of bricking my phone. Is there a file I can download somewhere to make the network active? If not, then what is my next best option?
