Help mobile network type: 1xRTT. Where'd my 3G go?

So recently I've stopped having any 3G.

It's odd, the notification bar indicator says 3G, but the Mobile Network Type listed under the phone status menu says CDMA - 1xRTT, and the speedtest app is returning 800ish ms pings and sub-150kbps speeds up and down, which sounds like 1x to me. I checked my data usage, and there's no way I'm being throttled beecause I've used something like 100MB so far this month.

So far, the impressively useless VM people have had me reboot my phone, and re-enter my MDN and MSID, and use the activate app, to no avail.

The phone's not been rooted or otherwise modified, for the record.

Also, I discovered that I have no voicemail anymore "Sorry, [my number] is not a recognized mailbox", but that sounds like something they'll definitely have to do from their end, and let's be honest, I use voicemail about as often as I use a fax, so it's not really relevant other than as an amusing anecdote about how they're called Virgin because they act like they've never done any of this mobile phone thing before.

edit: Also, the 1xRTT thing happens everywhere. I live in the middle of Los Angeles, so this isn't a matter of just living somewhere with no towers or something.

The Elite always shows 3g even when on 1x..

As far as voicemail it would seem they have an issue on their end

Your speeds could be anything to something on their side to a tower issue to a phone issue. Sounds like they've had you reactivate it which didn't work. Have you tried a factory reset? If not you may want to try and see if it helps. If not and nothing can be found wrong on your end or their end it may be a bad phone. Make them send you a new one.

I'd would suggest a hard (rtn) reset but you need your msl to do it. It essentially returns phone to out of box state and even wipes programing. Vm may walk you thru it but they generally don't like giving out msl's
.

If you want to force VM to do a hard reset, just turn on WiFi tethering. This will give you an error 67. In order for VM to fix the error they will tell you what your msl is and walk you through a hard reset. (note: Write down your msl, is case you want to root your phone later.)

welcome to my world. my device has been in 1x range since i activated it. reset after reset by vm with no fix,the icon indicators in the phone are faulty and inaccurate and do not represent your true connection whatsoever. meantime my old ov does not have these issues at all with speed. my elite constantly drops signal. downloads fail, constant can not locate remote server errors, constant no connection please retry errors. on and on. im nearing the end of my fcc resolution complaint being handled by sprint hq in texas. i hope to be rid of this device by the end of next week.

I'm still new at this, so please bear with me ...... but wouldn't a PRL Swap address this type of problem?

At home my Elite connects with CDMA - EvDo rev. A

So I talked to the support people (the ones who are on Twitter are actually incredibly useful), and they had me re-enter the MSID/MDN numbers and then reboot, and it's possible they did something on their end too, and BAM my 3g came back. Sadly, 10 days later, I'm back on 1x and emailing them again.

Hey y'all I fixed this issue for a family member...

Turn on/off airplane mode.

Might work, good luck.

Edit: it was for an LG tracphone on straight talk network.
