Help Mobile 'phone apps backups to Windows PC

Bob Hawkins

Newbie
I have a Moto G 4G 'phone. My most important apps to preserve, ColorNote and Locus Map, have their own internal backup facility. My concern is about restoring their data and settings in case of damage to or loss of my 'phone. I thought it might be a simple case of copying the apps' internal backup files to my Windows 8 PC for safekeeping. I would be able to copy them back to the same locations in a new 'phone. Wrong! I receive a 'Unspecified error' message when I try to copy the files. Must I use a dedicated backup app to succeed where I failed? I spent much time looking at such apps and gave up - I found the whole backup issue confusing - and it is not contacts, photographs, music, etc. that I am concerned about, on which a lot of the apps seem to focus.

ColorNote has an online backup which you can use if you want, that's what I do. I've not actually tried copying its data files to a PC or to another Android. Locus Map, don't know, never heard of that, does it have China?

I thank you for your informative reply. I have synced ColorNote online with Google successfully. Locus Map is a GPS navigation app. Perhaps I shall discover I can do something similar with that.

I have had experiences previously of differences between content shown in Windows Explorer on my PC and ES File Explorer on my 'phone. Now I find I am able to copy the Locus Map backup zipped file using ES File Explorer while continuing to be denied that facility through Windows Explorer. Such mysteries plague us all, probably.
