I am sure this is the 1-809097873073 post about this. However, when searching for threads I didn't find anything that satisfied my curiousity. Everything seems to point towards Lookout Mobile. I have the premium version. My question...is it really necessary? I don't like that I have to use the stock browser for the phone. Other than that it seems pretty light and fast.

No. It isn't "necessary" but it eases the mind of lots of people.

My guess is because the Premium version the OP is using offers a 'safe browsing' feature.

If you use Lookout for finding your phone when it's lost, that's fine. If you're using it as "antivirus," it's pretty much useless, and you'd be better off reading this:
