Modem/RIL

Sounds Good....Don't Understand It, But It Sounds Good :-)
Kernels
Lol.... Having Only Just Started Getting The Hang Of Flashing Separate Modems Andkernels, I Think I'll Hold OFf From This For A Wee While :-)

Updated post #1 with ModemRIL_BVLP7

Edit:
Interestingly, I've compared all the lib files within LPX, LP7 and LPE. It seems libsec-ril.so is the only one that differs between modem versions.
libsecril-client.so appears to be identical across all three.
Perhaps GetRIL will do the job properly for these modems after all.
Running the modemRIL CWM scripts will still do a more complete job, and will certainly avoid the need to run GetRIL after installing.

My question mark is over the libsecril-client-sap.so file that is in BVLPE modem firmware. A bigger shovel is required methinks....

GetRIL said i had diffrent ver, flashed your script and after it`s proper one :) Thx! I`ll see are there any changes with signal @ work tonight...

RIL - A Dummies Guide

Radio Interface Layer, or RIL, explained very, very, simply... for people like me!

Stomach = Signal

Mouth = RIL

Wife = Software

Breakfast = Hardware

Scenario 1 = unmatched RIL

It's Sunday morning and you wake up feeling hungry. You go downstairs and say to your wife, "Oi! Make me some breakfast, I'm hungry".

At this point, your wife either uses a frying pan to sculpt your face or, with much banging and clattering about in the kitchen, brings you a bowl of soggy cornflakes, a hard boiled egg, some burnt toast soldiers and a cup of luke warm tea.

Scenario 2 = matching RIL

It's Sunday morning and you wake up feeling hungry. You go downstairs and say to your wife, " Hello darling! You look radiant today. Why don't we have a nice breakfast and then maybe we could go shopping afterwards and see if we can find you a dress to match that lovely smile".

Your wife goes to the kitchen, feeling happier and in no time at all produces a full English breakfast of sausages, mushrooms, scrambled egg, bacon and tomatoes with orange juice and coffee.

In both scenarios the signal received is the same but the RIL translates it differently therefore enabling the software to interact more efficiently with the hardware thus producing a better outcome.

In terms of your phone this can mean fewer wakelocks and battery drain.

In stock, Samsung, firmware the RIL will match the modem but for us modders, who flash modems left, right and centre, it can, and does, mean that our RIL's do not match. The phone will still work and receive a good signal but may not operate as well as it would with a compatible RIL.

Hence, Hawker's RIL quest and GetRIL from the Play Store.

(OK. This was a very over simplistic, comic, explanation. For more details about RIL, see here.)

Good shout butty. You old smooth-talker you.
:D

I've started an XDA Thread on this to see if I can extract any more information about this from the boffins.

Nah, Think I'llStick With Your Version, Even Though I Can't Eat Egg :-)

Seriously Though, It Has Helped Me To Understand And I Shall Now Go See If Mine Match :-)

Thank You Both :-D

Charm the kn*ckers off a nun! ;)

Great! My role on this forum has been reduced to translating Hawker's, "boffin speak", into something that the rest of us mere mortals can understand! :listen:

Even Though I Can't Eat Egg :-)

There's always one isn't there?

Right, for the benefit of sntaylor, leave hard boiled eggs in scenario 1 and substitute scrambled egg with baked beans in scenario 2. Happy now?

I do not want to hear from any vegans... just substitute Brussel sprouts, pulses, broccoli and spinach where appropriate! :banghead:

On a serious note... I'm finding that the Orange, UK, modem for the GT-i9100P, variant, BVLP7 is still better for me than the newer Orange, UK, modem for the GT-i9100, BVLPE.

I think you should post the BVLPE up in the, "Latest i9100 modems" thread Hawker.

Isn't amazing what you can do with your endless supply of Rohypnol butty?

I've now updated that thread for your entertainment old fruit.

I'm finding BVLP7 and BVLPE pretty much on a par in terms of signal strength. However, BVLP7 seems to be behaving itself properly during Fast Dormancy testing, where as BVLPE seems to want to drop to IDLE at the drop of a hat.

Just out of interest, I was quickly comparing the modems (kindly) linked above. XXKI4 for some reason caused my phone to get stuck on the boot loop animation.

Im on o2 UK. BVLP7, BVLPE, UHLPG & XXLPX have all worked without problem so far.

When did you download it mate, as it's recently been updated?
May be worth downloading it again.

if not, then I mentioned this could perhaps cause compatibility issues between android versions (as KI4 is an old GB modem), so you would have to flash the RIL files from your ROM and install KI4 modem only.

I only downloaded it about 30 mins before I posted :)

I think I'll just pass on using this modem. Was only attempting a comparison between them to see which was the best for me. KI4 wasn't good for me :D

I am currently trying out RR JB Rom 3.0.6 and installed your RIL/BVLPE. When I checked it with GetRIL it sasys my RIL is XWLPO and my baseband is BVLPE. It also recomends that my baseband be the XWLPO.

Why is this? I thought if I installed the RIL/BVLPE that it would match....is there something I am missing?

Edit: I tried the RIL/XXLQ6. GetRIL says RIL is still XWLPO and baseband is XXLQ6 and recommends baseband XXLPO

Don't know if it matters or not, but this is my secondary rom with Siyah 4.1.5, my primary rom is NEAT LPI.

Samsung ril files have not yet been released for jb. Ril files work best on their respective Android version
