ROMs Modify and compress a rom.

I have done some google searches and while I have found some methods...I am wondering if there is a a "better way"

I am interested in taking a rom from an android set-top box and adding startup screens, custom xbmc....and then resign and compress....so I can write it to multiple boxes.

I thought I could figure this out but having a hard time...
 
Sonetimes its good to take alreadybbuiot roms and change it they way you want it to, so ull be able to learn or using Android SDK
 
Well you can use it as a base rom or change it the way you want it, instead of using windows to do it
