Help Modify Contacts view

Is there a way to modify the format in which phone numbers are displayed in Contacts? The phone number format in Contacts currently shows a number as 8885551212. It would be much easier for tired eyes to see the number in a different format like
888 555-1212 . Is there a way to change the format the number is listed for aged and tired eyes? I would extremely grateful for any help.

I believe the Android displays them as it syncs them from your Google contacts.

I sync my contacts with Google Hosted Apps and down to Microsoft Outlook ... and Outlook is pretty obstinate about formatting phone numbers consistently, even reformatting them.

I wish I could tell you how to do it in Google, but you might search to see if someone online has solved this. Oh, ... there might be an Android app that does it.
