Apps Monetizing Apps

I'm a college student and I was wondering how I could monetize my apps to give me some spending cash. Obviously I can sell it but what about free. A few of my apps I don't feel would sell but if free then they would be used. Im on a very small budget. Any ideas would be awesome. I've looked into admob but I got lost In how it works and if I had to pay and what not. So any ideas?
