Most recently used app list?

Sunny Rio

Android Enthusiast
I use a Windows computer, the start menu shows the most recent x apps. Very useful. Usually the app I want is right in front of me with one click. Is there an app doing a similar thing on Android?

A Samsung Galaxy A10. Running Android 11.

I'm afraid I don't know all this terminology - Nova Launcher, App Drawer, etc. I have nothing which resembles a "drawer".

I have three icons in a row on the bottom of the main screen, phone, messaging, camera. I can't remember if or how I put them there. They never change.

Above that are 5 icons I put there, the most common 5, the clock (for alarms), youtube, Boinc, a browser, and notepad. They're what I would call "on the desktop".

If I swipe up, I see all the apps in alphabetical order.

I'm looking for something akin to the Windows start menu, like this, where the left half is the most recently used, automatically updated, most common at the top:

its a custom launcher that is free, but the Prime key that you can purchase unlocks so much more customizations. people think that my phone is rooted because it does not behave like a samsung phone.

Nova Launcher
Nova Launcher Prime

basically manufactures like to add their own skin to the basic android os.....for example Samsung has OneUI. it is Samsong's own launcher. Nova is just one of many custom launchers that you can get from the play store. i have been using it for years. it is very small, but very snappy. there are so many customizations that you can do. you can customize the app drawer to your liking. one of the things you can do is list your most recent apps within the app drawer.

Oh, I didn't realise "z fold 4" was Samsung. I thought they were all Galaxy.

I'm mainly interested in the most recently used thing. Is that in the free or paid version? And how much is the paid version?

$5 bucks for Prime, and it is a one time purchase. whats cool is that when you get a new phone, you can make a backup on your old phone and have that file moved to the new phone and you can restore your setup and it will be like you never left.

not sure if it is on the free version or not. i just know that my setup has it. you can install the free version and see.

i would not call Nova Prime a rental. i bought it well over 10 years ago and have been using it since then. it really unlocks so much customization. for some it can be overwhelming with amount of things you can do.

Not familiar with Samsung but you should be able to swipe up from the bottom and hold for a second, that shows most recents. If you've got 3 button navigation (doesn't sound like you do) set up it should be the the square button on the right.
It's not launcher specific, it's part of Android.

I'm not really into paying for software, but maybe.

Swipe up and hold doesn't do anything more than swipe up does. I just get the complete set of apps.

I don't know what "3 button navigation" means - Android has always had 3 buttons, on v11 they're <, square, |||, with the square in the middle, not on the right. They mean "back", "desktop", "task manager".

its only $5 and the devs behind the launcher deserve it. the launcher is just that good. but that is your money and for me it was and is money well spent.

Post a screenshot of your home screen please.
Gesture navigation should work, not sure why it's not. From the very bottom most of the screen drag it up and pause, you should see actual images of the apps, not the icons. Like this:

This conversation is probably not permitted on here :)

I get your screen by just pressing the ||| icon, which I call the task manager. This also has 4 icons at the bottom, but they're not the most recent, as they include a calculator, which I have never used.

Dragging from the bottom (whether I let go or hold after dragging) produces this:

Forum screwed up, attached to next post.

So you do get your recent screens and can go right back into the open/running apps but there's also extra 'stuff' there? I'm going to assume that's Samsung's take on it. Different manufacturers do add stuff to stock Android to give their own spin - even Google does that with the pixel series.
That may be what you'll have to settle for - hopefully a Samsung guru will come along and be of more help.

You can see your recent apps with a single tap.

From the Home screen, tap the Recents icon( i.e. that 3 vertical lines button). All of your active or opened apps will be listed.

Now,
to open an app, simply tap it.
to view more apps, swipe left or right.
to close an app, swipe up.

No, my ||| button shows the running apps in large pictures, I can swipe left and right to see hem all. At the bottom are 4 app icons, including ones I've never used! At the top is a triple dot, which opens a menu containing only settings. In there is one item - to show "recommended" apps or not. The recommendations are absurd. I can't swipe left and right on the 4 it suggests. The screen looks exactly like what jhtalisman posted.

So, nowhere to get most recently used apps.

That IS the recently used apps.

That's stuff Samsung has added. They are, indeed, making suggestions about what they think you'd like. Manufacturers are helpful that way (not). There's probably no way to get rid of it, just ignore it and only look at the recents :)
