Help moto droid maxx keyboard won't work on a phone call

I was trying to plan a vacation the other day but was unable to use my search bar or internet because the keyboard won't work while on a phone call. This never used to be a problem - I often multitask by sending emails or texts or surfing the net while on phone calls. I am no longer able to do any of the things. Any ideas?

I tried installing another keyboard from the play store but was unable to disable the Google keyboard and try the new one.
