Would any of the moto g model phones been an upgrade from my old s6?

anything newer would be an upgrade from the s6. but you will need to be more specific. there are so many phones within the moto g series. its like wanting to know if the "s" series of samsung phones are any good.

Thinking about either moto g power or moto g stylus.

well both have pretty good reviews.

https://www.consumerreports.org/ele...-g-stylus-2022-smartphone-review-a5482260681/

but looking at the specs:
https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=10076&idPhone2=11282
the g power has 4 gigs of ram compared to 6 gigs with the g stylus. this means the g stylus can multitask much better than the g power. the g stylus also has more storage space with 64 gigs to 128 gigs respectively. also the camera is better on the g stylus.

so for me of the two you are interested in, i would go with the g stylus.

Or would a galaxy s9 plus be better? I may be able to buy one from a buddy/coworker supposed to be carrier unlocked.

Sorry I know I keep jumping around but I'm researching phones still would an galaxy a53 be a better overall phone than the stylus?
better is all relative. it will depend on what you are looking for. for me it would what android os it has. older os will only get so much support before updates stop. so i always look for the newest android os i can afford. i also look for how much ram the phone will get. anything 3 or less is not worth it these days. 4 gigs would be the bare minimum i would start with. next would be storage and whether it can be expanded via sd card (though these days more and more phones are losing the sd card slot). and for me the camera is just as important. and this is a little bit harder to judge just on specs. the software is just as important as to what size lenses, the phone has.

so to reiterate:
1. newer android os
2. ram
3. storage
4. camera

and then lastly what brand of phone it is. stay away from off-brand phones:
https://androidforums.com/threads/off-brand-phones-and-tablets-worth-the-low-cost.631594/

moto is a decent brand, but i am a samsung guy. stay away from LG as they are no longer making phones any more and thus you will eventually lose support for their phones.

as for the a53,
https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_a53_5g-11268.php

according to some reviews it is so so.....unless you get the 5G version.

I like Samsung phones myself but I don't want to spend over $300 for a phone so that rules out the newest Samsung galaxy s phones that's why I was looking at the Motorola but I'd really rather have a Samsung know they make good phones.

cool beans, come back and give us a review of the phone. i would give it a week or so before coming to an informed opinion of the phone.
There's quite a few apps that won't work with my s6 now so I really need a newer phone with newer android version I'm assuming it's because of the old android version even though it's on 7.0 now. Plus the s6 isn't supported my Verizon or Samsung anymore so time for a new phone since I don't rely on it for internet anymore.

The Galaxy S6 was the my clue that all modern Samsungs suck. It was NOT a good experience (poor battery life, no SD card support, gimped Edge display compared with the Note Edge). All their phones after sorta changed the paradigm to the point of alienating me. I loved TouchWiz, loved their earlier phones. I got pretty much every one of their classics, from the SII, S-Relay, etc. Everything today from them is a downgrade--less features, nothing to distinguish them, they're all too big, and ditching features like SD cards and headphone jacks, and relying on stupid, unreliable USB-C (have to plug in twice to get it to know it's charging, and always stops after 63% and have to reboot to continue charging otherwise it dies slowly while plugged in)

Thankfully I don't depend on a lot of apps anymore. I only use my phone to play music, send messages, and occasionally take a photo. Sometimes I take a note, but that's it. I'm still sporting a Galaxy S4 Mini. If 4G LTE ever dies, there'd be nothing left to go to so I guess I'd never use a smartphone again.

The Galaxy S5 was the pinnacle of features, design and innovation. There has not been a single phone from ANY OEM that has more features. Today it's all about being as boring as possible, and please! Flat UI is so old! It goes back to the early 1990s! Enough! I seriously hate flat UI design! Having a 2K capable OLED and displaying nothing but bright white with geometric shapes is like buying an 8K Q-LED TV and only using it to play I Love Lucy.

I agree about the s6 it was a pos but relied on it for Internet for almost 10 years the app I used finally stopped working so I had to get home Internet. I went from an s3 to the s6 I liked the 3 a lot better than the 6 but I'm pretty much set on getting an Samsung Galaxy a53 5g.

I just hate that they ditched TouchWiz for One UI. It's so lifeless and boring, even with a theme. No boot up music even. No value. No features.

Either way don't try with Moto. They've been run into the ground by Lenovo, which is sad given that Lenovo makes excellent laptops. For me, any 'new' phone is a total downgrade. They stopped making phones that check all the boxes for me since 2014.

Nobody is making a good smartphone anymore. No one wants to try and no one wants to make decent UI or add features anymore. So this isn't just against Samsung. It's everyone. There's only a couple of brands left these days and all of them suck IMO. They say that the 'market ha spoken' but the market has been artificially manipulated by the OEM. They only make one type of phone today, and if that's all one has to choose from, people will tolerate it just to keep the one app they need working if they depend on it, and that means when they need updated OS they have to buy an updated phone.

FYI NO one asked for a 6.5" display size, or dropping useful features like a removable battery or headphone jack, notification LED or even buttons. That was all on the OEMs. They failed to care about market demand at all, made changes that no one asked for, and ensured that only those few options remain, and since people have to upgrade eventually to use certain apps, they will choose from what is there. By no means has the market 'spoken' at all. They just work with what they have. The corporations don't give a damn what the market actually wants. They only care about their damned shareholders. I will never grasp it since that was NOT how I was taught in basic economics class in high school. Back then, any company pulling such consumer hostile crap would be bankrupt in weeks.

From 2007-2013 we had OEMs that kept packing on feature after feature, improving UI instead of regressing it, and onward. We went from amazing phones like the Nokia N95 to the BlackBerry to the slider smartphone and to a phone that had waterproofing, fingerprint reader, removable battery, heart rate sensor and so on. Then we got downgrades since. I can only dream of the sci-fi tech we'd have if we had just kept moving forward instead of backwards.

IT wouldn't even be that bad if it were only confined to Apple. Personally I don't understand how Apple succeeds by telling customers what they should want/need because that's NOT the company's job. The company's job is to satisfy consumer demand. That's it. Supply/Demand. Free Market economics. But why has everyone started turning into Apple while all the good companies went under? I mean how is it that Walmart with its massive ethical issues survives but a smaller player like K-Mart dies?

Seriously someone make that DeLorean time machine--because I want to go back to when things made sense.

There's a few apps I used that my s6 isn't compatible with anymore I'm assuming the outdated firmware/Android version that's another reason to get a newer phone.

Yeah that's what I mean by the market being artificially manipulated. People tell me that 'no one wants a phone with x feature otherwise they'd make one' but the market has been forced to upgrade because they force app updates which means phone upgrades when they don't update the OS and all you have is what's available to choose from, which is always a downgrade.

The market has not had control since at least 2013. I don't know what happened. They'd have to completely do a 180 to get me to buy anything new. I want more features than the Galaxy S5. Something with a beautiful UI to take advantage of the new screen tech. Something that actually feels like an upgrade. But OEMs don't care. They think they know what everyone wants and limits the choices to one type of phone today and when someone depends on an upgraded OS they only have that phone to upgrade to, even if it's just a downgrade.

If an app really tried forcing me to upgrade to that, I'd be uninstalling it. Or finding an alternative that works with what I have because what I have now is a better device than what anyone offers today. I don't know why all progress stopped in 2014 and got worse after 2020.

Apps like Walmart says my phone isn't compatible anymore it used to be so you have to get a newer phone if you want to use apps like Walmart or android auto.

I don't even need the Walmart app. I just go to Walmart and shop like I've done since the 80s. I'd go to Kmart personally but they don't exist.

As for Android Auto, I guess I'm lucky I don't have that new a vehicle. I just bluetooth stream my music to my infotainment system. All my music is on device and if I need navigation it's built-in.

Have you considered maybe Lineage or a Custom ROM? That should give your S6 a few more years. I heard that even the Galaxy SII, a phone from 2011, has Android 12 via Custom ROM. That would easily run those apps.

No disrespect but I don't like the s6 never have I'd rather have a newer phone than root the s6.

I have been using the moto G stylus 2022 since May of last year. It replaced my pixel 5. When I got it I had a list of three contender's
The Samsung Galaxy S 22 ultra.
The Motorola edge + 2022
The moto G stylus 5G (2022)
I went with the moto G stylus, first because first my wife told me until she gets her next note device I can't have one.;)
Second I sat down and compared the s 22 ultra and the moto G stylus. When you look at the specs, take into consideration the updates Samsung guarantees for the 22 ultra, the 22 blows the moto stylus out of the water.
But then it became about needs , functionality and that is where the moto G stylus took the lead.
I needed a device with a stylus for my job. I have to send various messages and having a stylus makes the job 100 times easier. I remember reading about and looking at videos of the 22 and the s pen and thought wow that's pretty cool
But do I really need it:thinking:
So in the end it came down to the edge vs the stylus.
The stylus won because of price and functionality . The draw back to Motorola phones is the support. The motorola edge I believe is guaranteed updates for two years. My stylus when I got it had android 11 (I read somewhere or saw some devices had android 12) the moto G stylus will eventually get Android 13 and possibly may get Android 14 but not likely.
Another positive about Motorola phones is they probably the next best thing to the pixel when it comes to a pure vanilla android experience.
