Moto x pure edition security problems

Swatty06

Lurker
Hey guys I just bought a new moto x pure edition from Amazon wearhouse deals. When I start up the phone it says the bootloader is unlocked and I didn't do it. Is there any security risks to keeping the phone as is or should I try to lock the bootloader. I don't really know how to do that. Any info will help. Thanks.

You could just keep it as is and flash a logo.bin for your device in fastboot. This will leave the bootloader unlocked and remove the warning. Why it was shipped like that not sure.

Hey @Swatty06, welcome to our AndroidForums :).

Now, bear in mind that I do not own your device, but I can give you a few thoughts/notes from my general perspective:

1. Here is the main area for your device: http://androidforums.com/forums/motorola-moto-x-pure-edition.3183/

There is a root area/tab for the Moto X Pure Edition, but I see there's only one thread in there at this moment .

2. Having an unlocked bootloader is indeed a potential security risk since some who gains physical access to your device could install a custom recovery and grab the data from your device.

3. That being said, having an unlocked bootloader is also a recovery feature. I have taken to purchasing Nexus devices due to one of the main reasons being an easily unlockable bootloader. I'm pretty sure your Moto X Pure Edition device is basically similar to the Nexus in this respect (and the vanilla Android that comes with it).

4. You don't have to re-lock your bootloader, but if you choose to, doing it is likely a simple matter of finding the correct fastboot USB drivers (shouldn't be hard to find those), getting the fastboot utility for your PC (we have that here at AF), and issuing the "fastboot oem lock" command.

5. Also, please have a read of this page re. locking the bootloader on your device:

This probably is a moot point for you now, but it might be relevant re. any warranty that might have been promised to you.

That's probably enough for you to absorb at this point, so I'll stop here for now.

Cheers!
