Root Motorola Droid X SBFable Yet??

SBF'ing a previous version will require cracking the bootloader. It's more likely that they will find a way to root 621 than SBF a previous version.

I'm actually typing this from ubuntu live cd while I wait for the sbf to do it's thing! Pretty easy just need a ubuntu cd and a usb stick. Wish me luck!

Success! Although I miss the droid animations and ringtones...I wonder if they'll come back after I restore my titanium backup?

I installed 621 OTA today. I'm ready to cry. Reading the posts, and a lot of research, I am confused.

From what I understand, you basically flash to a non-verizon 604.

Here's what I need to understand:

1. Is there a difference, between using "DX.621_root.zip" and "1KDStaz_MX_4.5.604.iso"?

2. what exactly is "non-verizon"? Can you still use verizon? What is the difference? What do you give up by being "non-verizon"?

3. "Jasondhsd: Although I miss the droid animations and ringtones..." What happened to 'em? Why are they gone? What else is missing?

Help would be greatly appreciated.

^^Not sure what the difference between the 2 files are, I used DX.621_root. I have Verizon and it works fine, no issues at all your phone model is just called milestoneX instead of DroidX. And since it's no longer a droid you lose the droid bootup animation, droid ringtones, and droid wallpaper.....but that can be restored if you track them down. I already restored my bootup animation and I just haven't had time to open up my backups to restore the wallpaper and ringtones.

Has its pluses and negatives. First of all to get the new 15p radio, you have to have it. It REALLY helps the signal, no question about it. On the negative, you can't go back to Froyo, I hated Froyo, so I could care less. The linux boot version is American I beleve, and If you go 2init MIUI, Gummy, CM9, there is really no difference, except for the better radio. With Gingerbread ROMs you have WIFI issues, but there are fixable. My old regular .605 wouldn't connect to WIFI unless I put it in airplane mode, so one again, not a big issue with me. I nandroid MIUI and Liberty depending on what I need that day, and love my phone more than ever. It's certainly not nearly as bad as some make it out to be.

Everyone,

After spending less than 24 hours with the .621 OTA update, which I senselessly accepted thinking it was something else, I realized that I could not live without root. Hence, I went the distance, and rooted my phone.

I used 1KDStaz_MX_4.5.604.iso image. Not the best interface, but does the job. It is reliable and fool-proof. It has this screen-saver thing though, the screen goes blank, in the middle of flashing. It really freaked me out. It turns out, it's just screen-saver. Just don't press escape or ctrl+c. Great time to utilize the brand new insert key on your keyboard.

For those who want to go ahead with the procedure, I strongly recommend keeping a stock .621 SBF in hand, in case something goes wrong. The image is available online, if you do some research. The file name is:
"1FF-p3a_shadow_cdma_shadow-user-2.3.4-4.5.1_57_DX8-51-120111-test-keys-signed-Verizon-US.sbf.gz"

The SBF image is pretty standard, nearly the exact same theme with the .621. My phone did not even require activation, which was cool.

A few disadvantages of the MilestoneX SBF:
1. You lose the droid x wallpapers, ringtones, and the boot animation. There must be a thousand boot animations in the market fora rooted phone, pick one. Most people use their own wallpaper and ringtones as well, so no big deal.
2. If you were a user of verizon widget, it does not work. In my research, I found a workaround, it's a non-market apk. I didn't try it, frankly, I don't care anyhow.

A few advantages of the MilestoneX SBF:
1. I liked the motorola boot animation. Again, customization is easy if you don't.
2. The battery life, before my market apps, is amazing. I haven't dropped 10%, yet the phone is on for 3 hours now.
3. You no longer need opengarden to turn your phone into a hotspot. An app is built in, and does not require activation or registration. It's under settings-wireless-hotspot.
3. It is rooted. 1KDS disc does it for you, if you choose to. If you don't want to root, then what are you doing messing with SBFs in the first place?
4. The wireless host name is fixed. I had a major problem, my wireless network would not recognize my phone, I had to change the host-name every other day from the router. I don't have to anymore.
5. The radio is better. I did not have signal in some of the rooms in the house before. Now I do. It's amazing.
6. The android system software version is 2.3.5. It is higher than verizon .621, which is 2.3.4. I think the newer the better, yet I don't know the difference. It must be in kernel somewhere.

On a final note, I prefer the MilestoneX .604 to DroidX .621. It's like having a new phone. I love my droid x again, it's like meeting your high-school sweetheart after twenty years, feels familiar and comfortable, yet new and exciting. I knew my phone had some more miles left in it!

If you have problems or questions, let me know. I'll try to help.

So wait guys do we just SBF the .621 prerooted file to phone ? you guys are confusing me.. what i am hearing is there's root access but no SBFing right? I heard we need Linux Ubuntu SBF method yeah?not windows RSD lite? will this method work on windows?? please answer ASAP

I've done this and it is working great, I'm running CM9 4.0.4 ICS right now. I too am on Verizon and it has no effect what so ever on your service. Once you flash to. 604 and check your phone info your phone is essentially a Milestone X, but flashing ROMs will change this. After flashing CM9 its back to saying it's a Droid X. So in short it has no effect on your service through Verizon what so ever.

Just to clarify:
1. It does not matter if your phone at .621 is rooted, ROMed, spray-painted to lime green, or have scratches on the screen. Once you SBF a phone, you re-flash the whole thing, they will all be gone. YOU CAN SBF .621, ONLY NOT TO AN EARLIER VERSION. .604 MilestoneX SBF is OK to flash.

2. Up until now, there is no root access for .621. HENCE, YOU RE-FLASH TO .604 MilestoneX, and root that.

3. They say, RSDLite cannot be used to flash .604 MilestoneX SBF. Apparently, it messes up your radio (the thing that communicates with the towers)

4. You don't need ubuntu. 1KDS has a live boot disk, that takes care of that problem. It flashes, and roots. You don't need to install anything. Just burn the darn disk and run it.

GreenMan: I'm running CM9 4.0.4 ICS

What bootloader or ROM manager did you use? My clockworkmod does not work anymore.

RSD Lite flashes rom, radio and boot loader.

Linux just flashes rom.

There's a reason why you want to use each with the appropriate rom. You want to keep the Verizon radio and bootloader, but use the .604 system since it can be rooted.

I sbfed .621 for the radio, the linuxed .604 then flashed .605 Liberty installed MiLoader and set the v4 lockscreen and I have a miui loading, super radioed, 1250 overclocked, 2 day battery, .605, lean mean machine. It is the best this phone has ever run. I notice on every ROM I seem to get much better battery life from my phone than most people report. I think that better radio getting more towers easier has something to do with it. Completely unprofessional opinion, but I know it works type thing.

Hey guys first time poster. I've had the X for almost two years and just decided I wanted to root. Obviously I see .621 creates problems, but from what I understand all you need to do is:

1. Run the 1KDStaz_MX_4.5.604.iso image. which will automatically flash and root.
2. Factory Reset your phone.
3. Flash a ROM and you're good to go?

Just wanted to make sure before I took the plunge. Thanks!
