Help Mounting SGS in Ubuntu Linux

Can anyone tell me how to mount the phone on Ubuntu Linux (LTS)? None of the suggestions I have seen in other threads work for me. I have set the phone in mass storage mode which is enough for it to work in windows but not Linux. I see several error messages with dmesg but I don't understand them (like "usb1-1: device descriptor read error -32").

Still doesn't work.

I get an error dialog "VirtualBox - Error"

Failed to attach the USB device Unknown devuce to the virtual machine

E_INVALIDARG (0x80070057)

Yes. I do have the SDK installed.

Strange. I can tell you that it is definitely possible to mount the SGS onto Ubuntu (since I also uses Ubuntu) in debug mode. Might have something to do with the fact that you are running ubuntu in virtual machine (as opposed to a direct installation to another partition).

I've just discovered that my previous phone's software had replaced my low level USB driver on my host OS (WinXP) :(. I've fixed that issue now but haven't tried to connect the phone through the Linux VM yet (got bigger problems now -- newest version of Kies does not work).

Why VM though? Why not just install it directly in a small partition?

I would have thought the answer to that was obvious. But here's three reasons for you:

  1. I don't have any unpartioned disk space and I don't want to shrink any existing partitions.
  2. It is more hassle to do the above than to create a VM.
  3. I want to be able to use the Linux OS without rebooting.
