Moving App from Droid Eris to new RAZR

Hi All, new to the forum and hopefully someone can help. I have a HTC Eris that is currently not on the network after I switched over to the new RAZR. There are two free apps on my old phone (no longer available on the market) that I want to transfer. What's the best way of doing this? Phone is not rooted, but would definitely consider rooting to do this. Although a lot of the rooting procedures I'm reading says you have to wipe the phone first so that wouldn't be helpful in my situation. Any help would be appreciated, please forgive the noobiness.

There are a few ways to do this, unrooted:

1. the free app Astro File Manager allows you to backup and restore applications installed on the phone.

- Install and start Astro on the Eris, and on the splash screen there is an icon for Application Backup - choose it, check the two apps that you want to backup, and let it run. This will put a folder called "backups" on the micro-SD card.

- Shut down the Eris, remove the SD card.

- Shut down the Razr, put the Eris's SD card in temporarily, and start the phone

- Install Astro onto the Razr. On the splash screen, choose File Manager (do not choose "Application Backup" yet.) In the file manager, press menu->preferences. Tap on "Backup Directory". Tap the little folder next to "/mnt/sdcard/backups" and this will show a view of folder icons. Tap the large "Up" button at the top, then tap "sdcard-ext", then tap "backups", then tap the "Ok" button. Tap the "Ok" button to confirm /mnt/sdcard-ext/backups". Press back to get to file manager display.

- Press menu->tools->Application backup. Tap on "Backed up Apps" on the top right. Tap the two that you want to restore, then tap the "Install" button.

2. Get the app MyBackup Pro for $5. Install it on the Eris, and use it to back up the two apps that you want on the Razr. Move the sd card over to the Razr. Install the app on the Razr (you will not need to pay $5 again - it will install without paying again). You may need to go into the preferences to change the backup location again - it probably defaults to /mnt/sdcard, which is not actually the SD card on the Razr, but a 16 MB internal storage area - the sd card is actually called /mnt/sdcard-ext. You should be able to restore the apps with this.

(As you may be able to tell, I have Astro on my phone, but I do not have MyBackup Pro, and did not want to go to the bother of installing it. If you go that route and get stuck, reply here and I will go ahead and try to troubleshoot - I have bought the app before, but I'm just being lazy at the moment.)

Thanks for your response doogald. Unfortunately I couldn't get past step 2. The two apps do not have the checkmarks next to them. Instead it is listed as (private). Any ideas?

You could try installing MyBackup. That app is free but only allows you to backup and restore on a single device. However, if you can back up, then you know that you can purchase a license and try restoring on the Razr.

I just read the help files on Astro - private files are generally paid apps, so Android does not allow them to be backed up (unrooted), so I am not sure that MyBackup will work, either (it's still worth a try, though.)

You are sure that these apps are not in the market? (try searching here: https://play.google.com/apps ) If not, perhaps if you email the developer they can send you a copy of the .apk file, if you can find out the dev's email address.

The issue with rooting is that you'd need to root on the Razr as well. That may be fine - the Razr, I believe, supports a bootstrap and recovery called Safestrap that preserves your stock environment while still allowing you to install a custom ROM - but that's up to you. If you are willing to root the Razr as well, I know that Titanium Backup can backup and restore the apps.

Too bad, guess I'm out of luck. I have searched my google account to try to get the app back but it says "no longer available...." etc. Oh well, thanks for your help anyway!
