Root Moving apps to extSDcard

I am FINALLY getting to the whole reason why I wanted to root in the first place: the ability to move some apps from the internal card to the external card. :D

Someone recommended Link2SD, so I installed it. Now it's saying I need to partition my SD card, and I'm not sure how to do that. Do I need to partition if I'm just moving and not linking, or can I not move without linking?

Do I even need a root-access app like Link2SD? Or will any app-moving app suffice, now that I have root access?

Thanks.

With the link2sd you have to add another partition to your sdcard using your pc. I used a program "magic partition" to add 1 gig to my sdcard . However, this process will delete everything on you card. I recommend you copy your card to your pc before hand then after, you can put your data back on. Then in the app link2sd I always just link my apps to my card. Hope this helps

Exactly what Dobbs said.
Sadly no, not any app can work.
Samsung disabled apps to SD support and thoroughly restricted it.:(
Only link2sd works

Okay, so I need to make a 1-GB partition on my external SD card. Is that an absolute number or a percentage? My external SD card is 64 gigs if that matters. (Well, 59-point-something.) Then I'll be able to move apps to the larger partition? I'm not sure why it needs the partition, but okay.

I do understand that not 100% of the app data will move. A large chunk is better than nothing when the internal storage is only 2 gigs.

Thanks.

As mentioned by dobbs69 use mini partition tool. Make sure you backup all current information on your SD card.

Here is a link for info on the process.

How to Partition SD Card and Use Link2SD in any Android Phone with Screenshots

I believe I read at one time that the 2nd partition should never exceed 10% of the SD card total size. I think a 2gb partition should be adequate. This is what I use for my 16gb SD card. You can select the format of the second partition. I currently use ext3 with no issues.

Once the card is formatted you can move all your files back to the SD card (within the first partition).

Good luck!

From the link:
"Insert your SD card to a card reader and open it on your computer."

What sort of card reader are we talking about here? Does this mean it can't be in my phone with my phone plugged into the computer?

Thanks.

Link I provided was mainly to assist with guidance on the process. You should be able to use only your phone as long as the partition program recognizes your external SD card properly. Just ensure that you select the correct drive (external SD card). You do not want to accidently format your phone or your computer.

Indeed not! Thank you.

While we're at it, someone answering a different question of mine told me that my external SD card should be formatted FAT32. Will I be able to kill two birds with this metaphorical stone?

Thanks.

Yes. The partition program will allow you to choose your partition sizes and formats at the same time.

I am following the instructions in the link and downloaded and installed MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition v7.8.

It is not locating my SD card. My computer IS recognizing my phone and displaying its contents and letting me back things up from the phone to my comptuer, but MiniTool is NOT locating my SD card.

:banghead:

dobbs, was that "Magic Partition" or "Partition Magic"? I'm running Windows 7.

Thanks.

I'm sorry, I was wrong in my earlier post. Just looked on my computer, and my partition program is called "MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition" and i have Windows 7 also. I put my sdcard in my card reader and it reads

What kind of card reader? I have my phone. I might have a camera, if I can easily insert and remove the micro SD card from the adapter.

Thanks.

If you have a computer store near by you might be able to pick up a reader. Usually about $10. Higher if you have to go to a best buy or similar.

Okay, I'm getting excited now. My husband's GPS is successfully functioning as a medium by which MiniTool can locate the SD card. :D

Shy what dobbs was trying to explain is that you would put your MicroSD Card in an sd adapter card that's specifically made to accomodate MicroSD Cards, then you would put the sd card adapter card (that has your MicroSD Card inside of it) into your computer's sd card reader slot, then you would be able to perform the necessary functions of partitioning your MicroSD Card with MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition 7.8, but glad to hear that you found another way to do it, gratz!! Perseverence usually pays off in the long run!! LMAO!! :p

Yeah, my micro SD card came with an SD card adapter. It's just that my computer doesn't have an SD card reader slot. For whatever reason, MiniTool wasn't seeing the card when my phone was connected, even though Windows Explorer could see it just fine. But my husband heard me muttering to myself and went out to the car and got the GPS, which takes SD cards because apparently it also plays music (doncha love gadgets that multi-task?) and lo and behold, MiniTool saw the SD card via the GPS.

Go figure.
