Moving Apps to SD Card. Just Rooted My Volt

domokins

Newbie
I just rooted my Volt and I wanted to know how I install apps onto SD or move them there in a way that won't eat up tons on internal storage space

First, you need to apply the sdfix patch.

Then, you need to use link2sd. The free version will let you move everything except OBB and data files, but you'll have to partition your SD card. Paid version will let you move OBB and data files, which does not require partitioning. Both versions will let you integrate system updates into the system partition, which will free up user space.

so if I get paid version, I don't need to partition to move everything? Also, how do I partition

If you want to move apk dex and lib files you have to partition. If you just want to move OBB and data files (these are really where the bulk of an app is), you don't have to partition, but you need the paid version.

You can partition your card either with an app on your phone, in Linux, or in Windows with some extra software.

Aparted seems to be the app of choice for on phone partitioning. Be sure to backup your SD card first.

Link2sd will also let you integrate system app updates back into the system partition which will free up more space.

Just for the sake of simplicity and because I have a relatively small card, I'm using link2sd to move data and OBB files that total over 50MB, then used the built in move to SD to move apks bigger than 50MB.

With this setup, I have 218 total apps (97 user apps) on my phone and this is what my storage looks like.

If that all feels to complicated, there is a module for xposed framework called XInternalSD that can redirect to the external SD through APIs. I don't know exactly what all it will affect though.

Link2SD is great, but it can also be a little too complicated for some people. A simpler option is to do what bg4m3r said and use the built- in feature to move some of your apps to the SD card. To do this, just go into system settings, apps, select a large app, and tap the "Move to SD card" button.

If you have some games that use large data or obb folders, you can move up to 3 of those to the SD card using the free version of FolderMount:

If you need to free up more internal storage than you can with the above, then you should probably look into the more complicated options, either Link2SD or XInternalSD. If you google, there are tutorials on how to setup Link2SD, including how to partition your SD card.

He's already tried the stock move option, that's not cutting it. Link2SD can move OBB and data without partitioning, and that's where the bulk of your space consumption is, especially with games. Integrating system app updates will help a lot too.
