Help Moving from Palm to Droid

reinbeau

I am going to be moving from a Garmin iQue 3600 (Palm based) to the Samsung Captivate. (My current phone is a Nokia 6126). Is there any way for me to pull my address data from the Palm desktop to the Captivate? Export/Import, perhaps - does it work? The phone gets here tomorrow, I'll be fiddling with it once it gets here. I am techno-savvy but I've never had a Droid based phone in my hand, so I have no idea what I'm getting myself into

What I really want is to use the numbers and names from my Nokia, but I'm betting I can't do that easily.

i'd be very surprised if you could not import from a CSV file into the phone.
I'll wait till someone knows for sure but on Android, anything is possible. :)

i found this, old but may work for you

Palm contacts -> Google - Android Forums

the steps outlined in the post are

Step 1: Export from Palm Desktop into *.csv format.
Step 2: Open file in Microsoft Excel.
Step 3: Sort rows by category column.
Step 4: Add first row for Google heading names.
Step 5: Add/rearrange/combine Palm columns to create those used by Google.
Step 6: Delete extra columns.
Step 7: Save result back to *.csv format.
Step 8: Make one copy of resulting file for each category on Palm.
Step 9: Edit each of the resulting files by deleting all rows before and after that category. Of course, leave row 1 in place.
Step 10: Create a Group in Google contacts for each category on Palm.
Step 11: Import each of the files containing a Palm category one at a time, telling it to place the new imports into the appropriate Google group.

Awesome, thank you for all the suggestions! The .csv method will work well, because there are categories in the iQue that aren't addresses per se, and there's lots of 'waypoint' data I can edit out easily with that method. I'll follow the links and get myself edumacated before the Captivate gets here!

I just transferred my addresses from my Tapwave Zodiac to my HTC Incredible one category at a time as vCards via Bluetooth. Unfortunately the transfer would stop if it ran into a hard return anywhere in an address field, but it would show a snippet of text from the bad field, so I could locate and edit them manually.
