Moving from Palm

I have been using a Palm device, and therefore Palm desktop, for many many years. I have become very comfortable with the Palm desktop interface for its address book and calendar. It hasn

Log into Google on your browser. Here is the thing - Android is designed to be managed in the cloud and independent of a PC or Laptop. It works best when integrated with the Google ecosystem. So if you want to manage your device from a PC the easiest way is by signing into your Google Account through a browser and using Google Contacts, GMail, Calendar, etc.

I would really prefer to not put my calender and contact info into the cloud. I am often involved with sensitive issues and clients that would make that inadvisable. I would like to keep any syncing going on between my phone and my desktop or laptop.

You can use the stock Calendar and Contacts apps. Turn off sync to keep from sending anything to the cloud, that keeps it on the phone only. Use MyPhoneExplorer to sync the phone to the PC.

Be aware that keeping sensitive info on a Windows PC is riskier than sending it to Google's cloud.

FYI.

Smartphone theft is on the rise. If you keep "sensitive issues and clients" info. on a phone in a non-encrypted form, then you are asking for trouble. I keep most of my client info. in a encrypted wallet. However, I will admit it is hard to link standard calendar entries with the wallet.

I would suggest, for easy moving, sync Palm Desktop to Outlook, then stop using Palm Desktop, and choose one of the multiple PC programs for Android to manage your data. For a Galaxy SIII, the official Samsung PC management software is called Kies, and then you can also use third party programs like MyPhoneExplorer or CompanionLink, both of them are pretty trustworthy and have better reviews than Kies.

+1 for MPE. I use it to sync my Outlook calendar and contacts with my phone. It'll also do notes and tasks. I'd 'search' on the forum as I've seen a few threads from 'Palm refugees' asking similar questions.

Ummm, explain? The 'data' is on whichever phone you have, so that part doesn't change between a 'local' sync and a 'cloud' sync. I backup my PC regularly so no more danger of losing data than with Google. Noone else can get to my PC as it's in my house, so that's more secure (to me). Plus I know where my data is. With Google it is almost certainly held in a foreign country (probably the US - and I'm in the UK. We may speak, roughly, the same language but our legal systems are very different) subject to that country's data/legal requirements.

So, I'm with the OP, keep it local.

Palm didn't just sync calendar, lists, contacts - you could also sync MS office, Quicken, Act, photos, and other various items in one fell swoop. That was the beauty of it. You checked off what you wanted to sync and turned the sync on.

It put files where you could get to them and open in appropriate program on computer. I used Pocket Money then and use it now. Far easier to find the synced files on Palm desktop than on Android. The same for Docs to Go. I used it with WordPerfect.
