Help mp3 ringtone lost after power off

LG Optimus Elite.
I go into Music Player and select an mp3 and tell it to set as ringtone. Then I go into ringtones and I see it is set there. If I power off the phone and turn it back on, the ringtone is missing and it just picks one of the built in ringtones. Is there another way to set the mp3 as a ringtone? How do I get it to save the ringtone (even after power off)?

Create a "ringtones" folder under the "media" folder on your phone. Copy the mp3 from your SD card to this new folder. The mp3 will then show up under the normal ringtone choices for you to pick. And it stays after power off/on.
