Help MP4 on android phone.

We have an autistic grandson who is dependent upon ipods. As these things are prone to breakage, which inexpensive or used phones would be good to use (unactivated) as simple, compact and inexpensive MP4 viewers with software like VLC?

I assume minimum requirements would be:
5" screen
Adequate resolution
3-4 hour batterylife
32GB sd card capability

Sorry, was hunting software in other thread, not hardware as in this one.

I'm new to android and do have many questions, especially as I will need to buy several.
