Had to do the kdz update to the 10d version from 10b. The 10d version is rootable and has an option in developer options to unlock oem. I was able to get TWRP recovery on the phone. Rooted with King root and ran the exploit to get rid of Kinguser and replace with SuperSu.

Of course I have been using the LG Flash Tool for a while now. I have used it to get out of a soft brick and when I was working with the L70 I used it to downgrade for root. It shouldn't brick your phone either. Just follow the instructions and you should be good to go.
