Help MTP not working properly with my PC

Daboa

Newbie
The MTP connection appears to work on my laptop, but on my desktop (with the exact same drivers manually installed), the device doesn't work. It shows up in Windows and I can open it to see the folders in the phone and the SD card, but the files become unresponsive quickly. Example:
  1. Plug in the phone
  2. Navigate in explorer to my music directory and open it.
  3. Half of the folders load and then it hangs up. The directory bar at the top does the loading animation very slowly. The rest of the contents never load and no file operations can be done. Trying to view My Computer or looking at the portable device properties also hangs up.
  4. When I unplug the phone, the contents I was trying to load seem to appear for a split second before the windows close.

I'm pretty sure I have the drivers set up correctly since it's working on my laptop, which has the same version of Windows. But my desktop can't work with the MTP connection. If I try to sync the phone with media software, it hangs up and is "scanning" forever.

I've tried different USB cables and ports, front and back.

I've scoured the web with no luck. A few similar problems are mentioned, but no solutions. I'm guessing the issue is somehow with my desktop. What should I be looking for?

Galaxy S3 T999
Android 4.1.1
Windows 7 Professional

Make sure your Desktop has enough RAM.... or you could try using an older driver (worked for me)

My desktop has plenty of RAM available. I'm also using the old 1.4.6.0 Samsung driver that I found recommended for similar issues. Like I said, it works on my laptop (and on my work PC), but not on my home desktop. This indicates to me that my driver configuration is correct, but something is funky with my PC.

I know what you mean... does it recognize your phone if you reboot while it's still plugged in via USB?

Yes, it recognizes it, but attempting to access the files hangs up after a while.

I just tried again and things looked fine--I could navigate directories and see all my files--so I tried copying a ~50 MB file to my desktop. It got 40% through and I got the message:
"A device attached to the system is not functioning."
From the point onward I could not even load another directory on the phone.

Samsung should never have implemented this MTP option and should just go back to simple USB connected/charging/file sharing.

I could never get it to work in W7 no matter what i tried. I now rely on this app (Airdroid):

https://play.google.com/store/search?q=airdriod

And problem solved. If I'm moving a large amount of data, I take the card out my phone and put it in my PC card reader.

Yes, Airdroid is a great app, but my main goal is syncing media libraries/playlists. I can't sync iTunes/Winamp over Airdroid =/
I want to be like, "Look at me managing everything perfectly on my computer. Now I want my music organized the exact same way on my phone. *press button* Presto!"
I'm beginning to give up on this dream though....
(I've tried wi-fi sync with Winamp and MediaMonkey and both are too buggy. Playlists get screwed up.)

Samsung didn't make the change to MTP, it was changed by Google starting with ICS.
