Mugen 4600mAh For the S3

No problem. To be quite honest w/everyone here, if I was aware of the reputation & consistent quality of the HYPERION brand, I'd saved myself some $ & opted for it, or, the GORILLA GADGETS brand.

Not to take anything away from MUGEN, they make GREAT batteries w/a long battery life & last well beyond the warranty expiration (4th MUGEN battery overall).

I do have a std size HYPERION & am quite impressed w/the extra life it has over the stock OEM battery.

I still have 4 charge/discharge cycles remaining before I can give a more complete review of the MUGEN 4600.
I'll post results as they roll in....

I'm running the other Hyperion battery I have right now, and before going into much about it, I really want to test that battery again (because I know which charger it will came off of). If it's really the case that Hyperion is better with their extended batteries than standard, I'll make sure that's known.

I also tested the Seidio battery that I put on low priority to fill in some free test time, but now I have the EZOPower extended battery, 2 EZOPower standard batteries, and 2 Hyperion batteries to test. Can't wait for my second CBA to come so I can test more batteries at once.

It looks like I'll have enough tests done for more reviews in the next couple days.

Right now, as it stands, if I were to buy an extended battery, which one would you recommend? You may have already mentioned this in your test results, if so, I apologize :)

That's actually not a bad question to re-ask because what's recommended changes partly on performance and partly on price, and the prices are always changing.

Right now, the gorilla gadgets battery is $20 (4500mAh Samsung Galaxy S III Extended Life Battery) and the Hyperion battery is $25+$5 shipping from Amazon. I paid $3.25 for shipping on the GG battery. It's a good price and I consider it the best deal for the moment, unless you already have or want to use the QCell TPU.

The Hyperion/QCell batteries use the same back plate so their cover-like accessories are cross compatible, but the GG a very similar but different enough back that the QCell TPU doesn't fit. This matters because I think the QCell TPU is a whole lot better than the Hyperion TPU. There is one other TPU available which I haven't purchased/reviewed.

The GG battery has the highest capacity I have tested yet: 4430mAh out of 4500mAh advertised, which is 98.5% of advertised. The Hyperion battery tested at 4180mAh out of 4200mAh advertised, which is 99.5% of advertised. The Hyperion battery has the best tested to advertised ratio for an extended battery tested to date, and the GG battery has the second highest. Those couple percent wont ruin your day, but I think you should get what you pay for.

On my last (5th) re-charge for the breaking-in/conditioning of the MUGEN 4600.

Battery life has actually improved, I'm getting about 14hrs. of what I'd consider normal/average use in a day . Nothing scientific, just a normal day @ work, checking e-mail about 15-20 times, sending about 1/2 that many. Streaming a couple hours of PANDORA, while using a BLUETOOTH headset. About 30 minutes of phone calls & countless web-surfing.

All of this w/SYNC,WI-FI/BLUETOOTH on all day (no need for GPS @ work, so, I kept it off) Auto-brightness selected, & the power saver in the notification bar turned off.

The 14 hrs. may not sound so fantastic for such a battery, but, this is accomplished in a weak WIFI & 3G area during the entire 14 hr. run time, w/SYNC on the entire time.

I'd definitely recommend this battery to anyone & expect even better results if your WIFI/3G is strong (no LTE in my area).

I could have sworn I started a new thread... I don't see any moderator notes, but anyway...

The first test finished: Mugen 4600mAh battery for Samsung Galaxy S3 Battery 1, Test 1

The result is a bit disappointing for $89; the battery tested to have 4181mAh capacity. I'm going to run it through at least another test and see if the results improve at all or not.

I used an external charger... Once I get it charged back up again, I'll put it in my phone use an app called "OS Monitor" to tell me if the phone is continuing to charge the battery or not. I've done that procedure with other batteries to ensure that the charger is charging batteries as full as possible. The result is that the phone did not continue to charge them. The capacity readings from other batteries (standard and extended) were as expected when using the charger, too.


FWIW,the instructions that came w/my MUGEN 4600 specifically state to use the charger that came w/the phone during the conditioning process.
After the conditioning process,the instructions state that you may charge however you wish,whether it be an external charger,dock,etc....

I'm definitely no expert in this field,but,perhaps this may have had something to do w/your less-than stellar performance results.

I've followed this advice w/each of the four MUGEN batteries that I've had & have always had even better results than advertised.

On my 5th & final conditioning discharge & according to the projections,I'm going to get 17-18 hrs. use.

Again,nothing scientific as the exact processes running,but,everything is on except GPS,& as always while @ work,WI-FI & 3G are less than ideal.

So,consider me sold on MUGEN,it was once again,well worth the investment.:D

Shortly before he disappeared forever, he had stated that he used the same testing methods for Mugen as he did for every other battery, and didn't see it fit to use a special method for Mugen's battery. He said it was because some other batteries perform as advertised using the same method, so there was no reason to try and throw the results one way or the other. True story. I wonder what happened to him...

Um, I'm not getting the jist of the above post. Are you suggesting the instructions of the manufacturer need not be followed? Or, that you didn't follow the recommendations of the manufacturer based on this other persons' recommendations?


As I've stated a couple of times previously,I'm no expert,which is why I'm posting in this thread, to get the most accurate information on battery life, & in particular, the do's & don'ts on conditioning & charging post-conditioning (that is, if battery conditioning is actually necessary).

The TPU case by YESOO is slightly undersized for the MUGEN 4600 extended battery cover, but, works well enough on its own w/o a battery cover.

While this combination of battery & case w/o cover may sound odd, & admittedly does have a spongy feel in the space surrounding the actual battery, the voids can be easily filled by using some felt-tape to fill in the voids & give the case a more stout & secure feel.

Either way, the TPU case fits well & the matte finish on the backside is a welcome feature, along w/the added benefit of the buttons being covered, providing protection & preventing accidental pressing of the buttons while using/holding the phone.
 
I look forward to the review, I believe the battery is decent capacity. It does seem to be lasting longer than the stock i haven't charged it fully since i got it last night and I have used bluetooth, wifi, games, lte network, live 365 etc.. But, my guess it isn't 4500 but i am going to guess closer to 3600 though I can't be sure and would love a review of it.:)

Good guess. I tested 3620mAh. Better than stock, but not a great battery because you can get much better batteries for the same price and size.

This battery should pretty much be avoided at all costs. Anker, Onite, Hyperion, GG, EZOPower, and probably others are much better for the same physical dimensions and similar prices.
 
I got and tested my EZOPower 4200mAh extended battery without NFC from EZOPower Extended Battery with Door for Samsung Galaxy S3 - White (EZPBA11W) | Bargaincell.com for $19.99

I opened it up and I see that this battery has the same inscription has the Anker one does: 495060ARV/12F20S D 01 +4.35V.

Tested capacity is between 4230mAh and 4350mAh, with the 4350mAh run being almost exactly as the Anker run: 4360mAh.

I like the look of that chart, all the lines are on top of each other up until the end. I appreciate how EZOPower doesn't overstate their battery's capacity. This battery doesn't really stand out of the crowd... it's more expensive than the Anker battery but offers similar runtime, and doesn't have NFC. The only difference I found was that this battery comes with a different back plate than the Anker one. It's not a bad battery, but it's not the best option.

Update:
It looks like BargainCell isn't such a good bargain after all. This battery can be found on Amazon, with and without NFC. At this very moment, the battery is the same price (after shipping) as Anker's. For the price, and with NFC, it's the cheapest extended battery I've seen yet (that's worth buying, at least). The Amazon ID for the NFC battery is B009GN1PBK, and without NFC is B008R1UULI, and it's $12.99 for either (plus $2.98 shipping).

Finally...

After 6 tests, three on each battery, I have come to a conclusion about the Hyperion 2200mAh battery. It should have been labeled a 2100mAh battery. In my tests, 2150mAh is the highest reading I got.

The product does come with two batteries, and they both have NFC, and while that 3% is not going to ruin anybody's day, I think that every battery should provide the advertised output at least a few times in its life.

If you don't care about NFC, the EZOPower or Anker brands are a good bet depending on the prices. This isn't a bad battery either, but I couldn't get the advertised capacity out of the batteries with my test (that a number of other batteries have surpassed).

I have a Galaxy Note 2 battery on the way by Hyperion, and I'll be starting a new (or having my thread ninja-moved to an existing) thread for it.

Here are my newest charts for the standard and extended batteries. I had to redo all the tests because I found out the battery analyzer contacts are silver plated, and without being thoroughly cleaned first, it might not give reliable results. That also explains the delay. Fortunately, all the tests were similarly skewed, so there's no major changes. The biggest changes are Hyperion going from 99% to 100.9%, and Gorilla Gadgets testing at 4550mAh out of 4500mAh.

Thank you, Longus Catus, for all your work. I was thinking about buying an extended battery for my SG S3. From your previous postings, it seems like GG has the best deal so far. I will probably go for GG and try it out. Regarding the small difference in your testing, could it be the deviation in the testing tools?

I'm not sure what you're asking but I'll take it that you want to know more information about what happened. Some of the events are still unfolding, but I'll go into detail about every part...the good and the bad.

I use a CBA-III, a CBA-IV, and a CBA Charger for my manual and automated battery tests. CBA unimaginatively stands for computerized battery analyzer. I got them all from westmountainradio.com (I have no sort of affiliation with them.)

I had noticed that on some tests, they started out with strange readings, and other tests that put the battery capacity much lower than I expected. After redoing these tests, they became higher and higher until some batteries matched their advertised capacities and put the case on the back burner. I still noticed some tests had strange transients at the start, but I couldn't figure it out.

Since I was out of ideas, I contacted the CBA support team about the strange readings at the start of some tests. They said it was strange but hadn't seen it before. Ten days or so later, by a stroke of good luck, I (whether intentionally or not, I'm not certain) wiggled the battery analyzer part of a cable that connects it and the battery, and I looked at the chart and saw that I had created a disturbance.

I updated the CBA support and said that I was going to clean out the contacts with a q-tip and an abrasive cleaner (to gauge their response to see if I was going to do something stupid or not) and I asked if they had seen problems similar to that before. (That being erroneous readings when the cable is wiggled). They said occasionally, but the complaints had been resolved by replacing the cable.

So I cleaned out the contacts, one by one, with q-tips. Once I cleaned the contacts, I plugged everything in and wiggled the cable and saw that there were no disturbances/transients! That was great news figuring out the main problem. Also, the voltage drop or sag was considerably reduced with the clean contacts.

I contacted the CBA support team and included before and after pictures and told them of what I've said here, and further said that nothing about my environment or testing is particularly atypical and there are probably other people having problems and don't even know it. So I asked them to look into it.

During this time and the time I got a response back from the CBA support team, I had learned that the Powerpole (by Anderson) contacts are silver plated! This is fantastic for ensuring that the lowest possible resistance connection is made for any cables that use the Powerpole connector, but terrible if you don't know beforehand and don't properly clean the contacts before use. Once I got a response, they said that the dropbox link I sent was password protected (oops) and send them the images in the email.

I haven't gotten a response back from them yet about that. This is when I started retesting all the batteries and made the newest charts above. Now before every test I started to wiggle everything I could while checking the chart to make sure that no transients show up. And for the most part, they were gone since the cleaning. But there were still occasionally minuscule (maybe like 0.02v) glitches that I could create - much better than the large disruptions pre-cleaning.

Then I decided I had to solder every non-Powerpole connection to ensure a consistent and good contact and reliable test results. I also calibrated one battery analyzer to compensate for the resistance in the cables (one CBA has a direct battery connection, the other goes through the CBA Charger, and from there to the CBA, a fair amount of cable) used by measuring the voltage at the battery and at the battery analyzer and the CBA software did some calculations and adjusted the voltage reading. I did that tonight.

I think getting accurate results is very important if I am going to be giving advice on what people should and shouldn't buy. I've done everything I know this far to fix the problems I've found. I've also ordered silver cleaner so I can make sure the contacts for every Powerpole connector I use are as clean as possible. Some the things I did I probably should have done sooner.

That's pretty much all there is to say about it... Now, for some pictures... here is one before/after picture pair:

Notice in the cable connector pictures, you can see the start of a wide cleaning started by the scraping of the connectors as they are inserted into one another. This is called 'self wiping' and you can see it's better than nothing (since you can see the wide wipe) but it takes a whole lot more than that to clean off that major tarnish.

Thank you. Can you be more specific? Are you talking about the big picture changes regarding "before" and "after" cleaning, or how on the standard battery chart why do the two tests for the EZOPower battery #2 show 2.03Ah and 2.14Ah? Or why battery #1 shows 2.22Ah and 2.24Ah?

I charge each battery in the same fashion... use the external charger, and right before a test, re-insert it and wait for it to report charged. I also discharge it the same way too: 500mA. I may need to keep track of which charger and which battery analyzer were used for each test to see if there's a pattern.
 
I was talking about "Hyperion going from 99% to 100.9%, and Gorilla Gadgets testing at 4550mAh out of 4500mAh". The readings in second test are higher than the first ones. I thought those deviations are acceptable. It might be the dust on the contacts or maybe the deviation in the test tool. I don't know, just some thoughts. BTW, I placed an order from Gorilla Gadgets yesterday and chose the free first class shipping over $50, which was kinda cool. Hopefully it will arrive in 3 days and see how it works out.
 
Just wanted to pass this along to those who are having difficulty finding a case to use w/the MUGEN 4600 extended battery:

The GORILLA GADGETS 4500 extended battery cover fits w/the MUGEN 4600 extended battery.

In turn, you can either get the GORILLA GADGETS TPU Extended Battery Case,or,the YESOO TPU Extended Battery case, which I have (may in fact be the same case, not sure).
The YESOO TPU Extended Battery case fits perfectly, & of course, the GORILLA GADGETS Extended Battery Case will fit as well.
