multi-phone number apps

Howdy all,

I have a North Carolina area code, and live in South Carolina (we moved back to SC a year ago).

I want to have both my original NC phone number, and a new SC phone number, active on my phone (Verizon-- Commando 4G). Verizon tells me that there are apps that can do this via the 4G data.

Eventually I will change the phone over to ONLY having the SC phone number, but I can't do that cold-turkey. I need a few months buffer. I have PILES of documents and job resumes out that have only the NC number. I want to give these people a couple months to respond to me. Meanwhile, I need the SC to be active right now.

I'm looking for your suggestions. Here are the things that I'm needing:

*Need the new SC phone number to be portable. I will eventually move it from the 4G data app to the main number of the phone itself (voice network, not the data network).

* Need to be able to call people via the SC number through the app, so that they see their local area code show up on their caller ID. I get a lot of "no answers" from people who forget I have a NC phone number.

* Need to have an idea how much data this uses over the 4G. I don't use much data at all (usually under 150MB) but I only have a 500MB account.

Suggestions?

Thanks for reading all this, and for your suggestions!

Can you not just pay your provider (of the old number) to forward it to your new number for 6 months or so? We can do that in the UK anyway .....

Would there be a way to port my current Verizon number (the one I want to phase out) to an app-based system, and just have Verizon change my SIM number to something local?

Port one number to Google Voice.

Or get a dual SIM phone. Samsung makes one or more.

OK. I am not sure how to obtain a number and port it to Google voice. I'm sure it's simple but I'm not sure what to do for this.

This is what Verizon told me to do. Perhaps they can do this and just didn't offer it. Not the first time they would have done such a thing to me.

If you don't have an active Google Voice number or active SC area code number just go to Google Voice and sign up for a South Carolina area code number.

Google Voice is free with your Google Account. Then set up your new SC number to also ring your current phone and you will own both numbers and have them on the one phone

OK, I see. Thanks.

Is it possible to eventually take the SC number that I use for Google Voice and have it transferred to my Verizon phone, so that I only have 1 number (the SC number from Google Voice)?
