I have 2 friends with the same name (lets say John Doe)
Android has a habit of merging them, and I can't figure out how to stop this, it seems to happen whenever I turn sync on...

Into which field?
I had a middle name for one of them but it didn't work...

I know it may seem inconvenient but you may have to give one of them a different first or last name. or shorten one of their names

I have the same issue, so I made one of the Daves "David."

Problem solved. ;)

Jerry/Gerald, Patty/Patricia, etc... you get the idea.

I have a similar but opposite observation. I use my Galaxy S in Seoul and the USA, using different SIM cards. Consider I have one contact whose name is spelled in Korean, using their local Korean phone number (for example, 010-5555-5555. I have that same person from my USA sim card, name spelled in English, and phone number entered in the international format (e.g., +82-10-5555-5555). To my surprise, the Galaxy recognizes these two entries as the same person!

Another weird one, I had sent my daughter a text, let's call her Jane Doe, at phone number 1-999-555-5555. She replied, and the number from which her reply came (I'm guessing the equivalent of caller ID) was +1-999-555-5555, the only difference being the plus sign. The Android considered this two completely different numbers.

Which is in stark contrast to it recognizing two entries for my Korean friend from the post above, which had completely different names (one in English and one in Korean), and completely different phone numbers, prefix-wise. Odd.
