Multiple Contacts on Phone

Honestly I don't know where to go with this question
My primary place for storing Contacts is in Outlook for Exchange. I have my own domain and use it for work and personal email.
But when setting up a phone, of course using a Gmail account, there's no choice on that. But my gripe is that the phone has multiple copies of the same contact (different color circle icons though). I just counted six of the same contact in the stock phone "Contacts" app; others show up 2-3 times. I have tried not migrating certain accounts but I still get multiple entries on the phone. I'd love to eliminate these multiple contact entries on the phone. Actually I'd love to wipe ALL Gmail contacts and start over. But I'm afraid to delete something on the phone for fear it might start changing the contacts in Exchange/Outlook.

Anyone have this issue? And suggestions?

THANK YOU!

here you go:
Want: Outlook.com contacts on android phone only

basically go into your contacts select manage accounts and make sure outlook is set to sync and then turn off the other accounts.

Great lead Ocnbrz!

One "problem" - a key bit if advice may be outdated. The helper says "when you are in your <Contacts> app, when you tap on what appears above <Manage Contacts>, you will (should get a list of where all your contacts on this device is being stored similar to the attached screenshot." I didn't see any option to "manage contacts." I can manage accounts, but can't manage contacts. So you see that option? I'll try to use the general concepts and see if I can get to the same place.

Thank you for taking the time!

yeah I see that problem as well Treo.. I accidently when factory resetting my devices, renamed them a bunch of random names, and how do I disconnect from just one device?

Believe me, I'm no expert! But what I did discover in trying to solve my problem is that the menus are a bit confusing insofar as they don't tell you that there are sub menus that you can drill down to. I drilled down three or four levels and finally discovered a button that says "sync account" or not. I started unsyncing everything other than my exchange account and was able to lose the multiple duplicate contacts that were caused by having numerous accounts synced. Including accounts for Samsung, WhatsApp, etc. Each one imported a copy of the contact data, much of which was outdated.

Maybe you can disconnect by unsyncing your accounts?

I somehow discovered by downloading a file eraser, I went away and just as soon as the contacts where lingering on it, still the clone numbers on the outlook, turned to files of where I just right click to clear off the numbers, and it works! By accident.
