multiple contacts

After clicking on the icon for sms on home page. it opens up then i click on contacts to add. but when contacts opens it has multiple contacts of the same name. how do i fix this.

Your problem is likely due to having the same contacts saved as both 'Google' (aka Gmail) contacts and as 'Phone' contacts and the contacts app set to display both, resulting in duplicates.

The exact correction process will vary depending on your phone and the contacts app you use, but basically you need to go into the 'Display' settings of the your contacts app and choose which contacts you want to see.

Your phone's manual should help explain this more thoroughly.

If that turns out to not be the problem, or only a part of it, also check your contacts on your Gmail web account - go to Contacts, then look for the tools drop-down near the top, and choose manage duplicates from there.
