I leave sync email enabled and just turn off notifications in the Gmail app. Just so I have something as a backup for AquaMail - not that AquaMail has ever had any problem at all.
I will advise you to use mymail application available in playstore. Very good and simple application. You can use for all the email clients. You can even make your own email ID at my.com..more secure than any other web based email clients. No password needed...
